Film Finances sponsors Student Symposium at the Telluride Film Festival --

For the second year running Film Finances Inc. sponsors the Student Symposium at the 41st Telluride Film Festival (TFF), which takes place from 29 August to 1 September in Telluride, Colorado. South African animation school graduate Gasan Sallies, Nikki Tran from Australia, and Xixi Wang and Yu Xie from China are the four overseas students to be selected to attend TFF as a part of the film program with support from Film Finances and the festival.

The National Film and Video Foundation, Denis Lillie at the Cape Film Commission and The Animation School in Cape Town, along with Film Finances South Africa managing director Jane Fry, helped field the South African candidates. The finalists were chosen by Telluride s Student Symposium.

The selected graduates will have a chance to experience a leading US film festival, attended by top film professionals. The Symposium students will follow a special curriculum of workshops and discussions with film creatives and executives and be exposed to new films from some of the world s best filmmakers.

We are very pleased to support the various film communities where Film Finances operates, says Film Finances co-CEO Kurt Woolner. Sponsoring young filmmakers from several of these countries to attend the Telluride Festival, to meet established filmmakers and their peers, is a powerful way for us to fulfil this important mission.

Sallies was raised in a filmmaking family in Cape Town, South Africa and graduated with a degree in Digital Animation in 2013 from The Animation School in Cape Town. With a passion for visual effects and unique storytelling abilities, Sallies made various shorts, including animated/live-action film The Angels Dance and 2D-animated The Lost Soul. He also wrote and directed his graduate film, 3D-animated Consumed. Sallies has worked as head insert animator for the SABC documentary Cancer of the Soul, as well as in advertising.

TFF s Student Symposium was launched 1989 to give undergraduate and graduate students the chance to participate in an immersive film experience of discussions and screenings. The only prerequisite for participation is a passionate love of film. The group of approximately 50 students talk, live, eat, breathe, and view films throughout the festival.

Each day begins with a film discussion with the faculty: Howie Movshovitz, critic for Colorado and National Public Radio and Director of Education for the Starz Encore Film Center at the University of Colorado, Denver; and Linda Williams, Professor of Film Studies and Rhetoric at University of California, Berkeley.

Guest speakers at the Symposium in recent years have included George Lucas, Werner Herzog, Ang Lee, Tilda Swinton, Gus Van Sant, Tom Shadyac, David Lynch, Salman Rushdie, Nicole Holofcener, Peter Bogdanovich, Errol Morris, Kathy Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Barry Sonnenfeld, Stephen Sondheim, Jean-Claude Carriere, and Buck Henry.
