The audio team for the entertainment event must blend speech intelligibility with full-range music reproduction while considering the broadcast
Last week's NFL Draft, the 92nd annual edition, reflected the event's continued evolution, from a smoke-filled, hotel-room horse trade to a full-blown televised entertainment production. In fact, in keeping with broadcast's focus on pacing, the time between first-round selections was shortened from 10 minutes to eight minutes. Tempo, tempo! as a production manager might say.
This year's iteration also continued the trend of keeping the audio at the forefront of the production, with the dual (occasionally conflicting) goals of high levels of speech intelligibility and full-range music reproduction.
A Hybrid Environment'
The Draft is a hybrid environment: it sits right between broadcast and live entertainment, explains Rafael Rosales, senior audio engineer, LD Systems, which was contracted to provide the event's sound. On one side, you have speech that has to be extremely intelligible: handheld mics, presenters, constant movement, and a lot of variability. On the other side, you have full entertainment segments with guest bands that need to feel like a live show: full bandwidth, energy, and impact. The challenge becomes balancing intelligibility, musical impact, and broadcast control all at the same time.
Those considerations are universal in today's sports-as-event era, and they also have to be adapted to whatever venue the league chooses each year, whether indoors or outside.
Acoustically, you're dealing with temporary structures and changing geometries every year, Rosales points out. Each setup presents different challenges in terms of reflections, coverage consistency, and how the system interacts with the space.
Balancing Live and Broadcast
And then there's the broadcast layer, he adds. There are always open microphones for talent, so I have to control system coverage and energy carefully, to avoid spill, while still delivering a strong experience in the room.
More specifically, it all starts with precise and intentional sonic coverage of the venue and the audience. I design the system so that every seat is getting direct sound. That's critical for intelligibility, especially with handheld mics that are constantly moving, Rosales says. From there, it's about voicing and system control. For speech, I need stability in the midrange and a system that doesn't exaggerate problem areas; for music, the same system needs to open up: full bandwidth, strong low end, and enough headroom to deliver a concert-level experience.
At the same time, he continues, there's a visual layer to the design. In the Draft theater, the system needs to stay very discreet and out of view so it doesn't interfere with cameras or sightlines. In the audience area, I have more freedom to scale, but it still needs to look clean and intentional on camera, almost like part of the show. Instead of designing separate systems, I design one system that can handle both: controlled and articulate for speech but scalable and powerful for music.
Consistency is key, he continues. If the system behaves predictably across the entire coverage area, it allows the mix engineers to move between speech and music naturally, without fighting the PA. And all of that has to coexist with broadcast, delivering energy to the audience without interfering with open microphones.
The Audio Agenda
A look at the NFL Draft's audio-technology inventory suggests it could be confused with a world tour by a major music artist. In this case, the PA system for the Draft was built entirely around L-Acoustics components. In the Draft theater, a controlled deployment of K2 mains, K2 outfills, and Kara II front fills provided full coverage. In the audience area, it scaled up significantly: main hangs were K1 over K2, with LFE handled by KS28 subs, all powered by LA12X amplified controllers on an AVB network, so the system is fully networked end to end. Everything is further routed through a DirectOut Prodigy MP processor.
LD Systems' Rafael Rosales: It's about building a system that balances control, performance, and presentation. It has to deliver clarity for speech, impact for music, and integrate visually into the show, all at the same time. This system design offered us a lot of flexibility and control across all sources and destinations, he says.
The venue-sound mix was split by function: a Yamaha PM5 desk FOH handling the live Draft production and a second PM5 for the house band's front-of-house mix, with a DiGiCo SD10 console handling house-band monitors. The featured music acts deployed Avid S6L consoles on both FOH and monitors, which made the production as much like a multi-stage festival as a single-focus sports event.
The PA system is shared across all segments, says Rosales, but the control workflows are purpose-built depending on whether it's Draft production, house band, or guest performances. It's about building a system that balances control, performance, and presentation. It has to deliver clarity for speech, impact for music, and integrate visually into the show, all at the same time.
