WRALs Sockett Honored with Leadership Technology Award at NAB

WRAL-TVs Pete Sockett has earned a Broadcasting & Cable Leadership Technologoy Award.

WRAL-TV and Capitol Broadcasting are leaders and innovators in broadcasting and technology and WRAL-TV Director of Engineering and Operations Pete Sockett is an integral part of making those new strides happen. Broadcasting & Cable has honored Sockett with one of six Leadership Technology Awards presented at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. Sockett received the award at a reception during the NAB on Monday, April 8, 2013.

The 2013 class of Broadcasting & Cable's Technology Leadership Awards offers a diverse look at what it means to be a technical innovator in the television industry, writes George Winslow in the B&C article honoring Sockett and the other winners. But one quality unites them, a commonality that is increasingly important to the TV business as it struggles to adapt to a rapidly changing video and technical landscape-their willingness to embrace the collaborative process of innovation.

Sockett joined WRAL in June of 2003. During his tenure at the station, WRAL-DT tested datacast video on demand, launched the first public deployment of mobile digital TV in a Capital Area Transit bus, and generating solar power at the tower farm. Sockett led WRAL in completely rebuilding its tech infrastructure in 2007. And the innovations continue. Frequently WRAL and Capitol Broadcasting will pioneer brand new technology for which no instruction handbook has yet been created. Sockett and his team are often part of writing those guides, making a road map for others in the industry to follow.

Capitol Broadcasting Company has a rich tradition of leadership in technology in our industry, said WRAL-TV Vice President & General Manager Steve Hammel. In the nearly 10 years Pete has been here, he has helped lead us down that path. We have a great Team in the Engineering Department. Pete leads that stellar Team. Pete can discuss with his engineering peers all of that tech talk' AND can speak English' to the rest of us explaining complex issues in the simplest of ways so we can all understand the concept. Whether it's out on a remote (i.e.: Tall Ships, Christmas Parade, Veterans Day Parade the list goes on) or on a myriad of our capital projects (Master Control, mini-studios, production control rooms that list goes on, too!), Pete is always in the thick of things leading us to success.
