Ericsson-enabled O2 5G networks have been switched on in Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and Leeds, supporting commercially available O2 5G smartphones.
Ericsson Cloud Core network for 5G includes Cloud Packet Core and Cloud Unified Data Management and Policy, while 5G New Radio (NR) RAN product and solutions from the Ericsson Radio System include Baseband 6630, Radio 8823 and AIR 6488.
Ericsson also provides Managed Services solutions to O2's 5G network, including design, optimization and day-to-day operations.
In addition to delivering enhanced mobile broadband to subscribers, O2 will also explore 5G innovation opportunities with enterprise and industry customers in the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 as digitalization gathers pace.
Ericsson will continue to help O2 roll out 5G in other cities and towns in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
O2 has launched 5G business tariffs to suit businesses of every size, whatever their data requirements. Small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) and enterprise customers will benefit from the no premium' 5G Access bolt-on, which can be added to a customer's subscription, without the need to change their contract. O2 will make further announcments in the following months.
Marielle Lindgren, Head of Ericsson UK & Ireland, says: 5G will be a major catalyst in making digitalization a reality across England, Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland. As an innovation platform like no other, Ericsson is working closely with O2 as a trusted and secure partner to speedily enable 5G so that their subscriber, enterprise, and industry customers can capture the full benefits.
Ericsson now has more than 70 commercial 5G agreements or contracts with unique communication service providers, of which 21 are live networks.

Ericsson Radio System has been 5G-ready since 2015; to make it 5G capable, it only needs a remote software installation. In total, Ericsson has shipped 4 million 5G-ready radios to customers since 2015, giving them a unique advantage.
