Migos One Time ... and 500 mattes!

The Finish team have had their ear to the ground this week awaiting Migos amazingly trippy promo One Time (directed by Ninian Doff, Pulse Films) to be released by YouTube in the run-up to the 2015 YouTube Music Awards. All of the post, including visual effects, were completed at Finish with Jason Watts & Andy Copping on Flame, Kayley Fernandes, Georgi Mitkov & Neville Johnson on Nuke and Julien Biard grading.

Jason Comments, When Ninian gave us the brief to create frozen time tunnels out of the performers, without motion control or repeatable heads, we knew it would be an exciting creative challenge that we couldnt wait to get stuck into.

The pretext of the video is the aftermath of a wild all-night party. As members Quavo, Offset and Takeoff wake up in a Beverly Hills mansion, looking a little worse for wear, they realise some potent effects of their night out havent worn off yet. As they move about their surroundings they leave a trail of trippy freeze frames which time to the steady beats in the song and reveal aspects of the party from the night before.

The pressure was on comments Jason, to deliver this ambitious promo that involved making 1500 mattes in 6 days. To achieve the end result we had to work with 3D camera tracking, art directing the objects in a 3D environment in an interesting and fun way, paying close attention to time and deadline.

Director Ninian Doff explains how the ideas for the promo were achieved, This idea involved what we started calling time tunnels . strange 4th dimension trails of frozen images tracked back into scenes. Once I started talking to Finish about achieving this we quickly realised we were talking about thousands of individual cut out images! Yet impossibly this was achieved in an incredibly short time frame. As always Finish brought a finesse and final touch to my idea which elevated it up a notch: some of them subtle like enhancing the depth and sense of 3D space in the shots which made such a huge difference to the energy and dynamism of the shot, and then more obvious moments like the great animation on the floating mouths snapping and whipping around. This was a big, complicated, left field idea that had many unknowns and instead of running a mile Finish once again took on the challenge and threw themselves into it!'

Jason finishes, Were really pleased to have faced the challenge and have had a great time working with the creative brains of Ninian and Pulse once again. We have such a fun film as a result and look forward to working on more projects with them both in future.
