Digital Alert Systems, a global leader in emergency communications solutions for media providers, and D2D Technologies, a specialist in broadcast stream processing, today announced the launch of DAS-Flex , an innovative combination of both companies' technologies creating a unified, resilient broadcast solution. This collaboration, built over several years, culminates in a product that streamlines operations and ensures broadcasters stay reliably on-air, even in the most challenging conditions.
This partnership is a true technology integration, with Digital Alert Systems embedding D2D's multiplexing capabilities directly into the DASDEC platform. The result is a multirole device that acts as an emergency alert encoder/decoder, signal switcher, media playout system, and ASI-IP bridge all in one. For broadcasters, this means reduced hardware requirements and simplified workflows.
We're excited to bring our Flex-series technology into this powerful new platform, said Steve Doll, president at D2D Technologies. The DAS-Flex combo is a great example of how thoughtful integration can solve real-world challenges for broadcasters. Whether it's ensuring signal continuity during a disaster or enabling localized alerts at translator sites, this solution offers a unified approach with enhanced performance and adaptability.
DAS-Flex brings together Digital Alert Systems' DASDEC-III emergency messaging platform and D2D Technologies' Flex-series ATSC multiplexer and media keyer in a compact 2RU chassis. This integration provides broadcasters with a robust, all-in-one system built for continuity and adaptability. While purpose-built for U.S. broadcasters and cable operators subject to EAS/CAP mandates, its modular design makes it suitable for a wide range of program distribution environments.
The platform is engineered to support three primary use cases:
For full-power stations, during normal operation, the DASDEC provides alert information within the standard air chain, but with the DAS-Flex option, it functions as a tower backup switch with alerting capabilities, automatically detecting a loss of the studio-transmitter link (STL) and switching to a secondary feed, displaying a technical difficulties slate, or playing locally stored media. Even during these fallback modes, DAS-Flex continues to monitor and display emergency alerts across all channels, ensuring uninterrupted public safety messaging.
For translator sites, DAS-Flex enables localized alert insertion, allowing geographically targeted emergency messages without disrupting the broader network. This is especially valuable for statewide networks, where over-alerting can lead to viewer fatigue.
For low-power television (LPTV) operators, DAS-Flex offers easy deployment with support for ASI and SRT feeds, helping stations remain FCC-compliant without overspending.
What sets DAS-Flex apart is its resilience. The system is designed to operate in disaster-prone environments such as wildfires, floods, or power outages. It includes a fail-safe bypass that maintains a direct signal path to the transmitter in the event of a power loss, and its always-on alerting ensures that emergency messages are never missed. The platform also supports future enhancements, such as event-triggered video playback, which could provide viewers with localized visual information, like evacuation maps or shelter locations, immediately following an alert.
With DAS-Flex, broadcasters can be confident they are always on, always alert, said Bill Robertson, vice-president of business development at Digital Alert Systems. By integrating our DASDEC-III platform with D2D's multiplexing technology, we've created a compact solution that improves reliability and operational efficiency. This collaboration is about doing more with less fewer devices, fewer points of failure, and a more streamlined path to keeping audiences informed when it matters most.
The DAS-Flex combo will be showcased at the upcoming Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) Show, Aug. 6-7, where attendees can see firsthand how this integrated platform transforms emergency alerting and broadcast continuity.
