Google and Facebook apps dominant the balance of the top ten apps.
COLUMBIA, MD; March 11, 2013WhatsApp Messenger is the leading smartphone app for mobile device users in the Arbitron Mobile panel in Germany. Nearly 80 percent of Germany panelists used WhatsApp Messenger in January, spending an average of 489 minutes per month with the cross-platform mobile messaging app that allows users to send text, images, video and audio messages to individuals and groups.
Messaging is a universal, daily pastime among German smartphone panelists. Whether through specialized apps, or via built-in features, smartphone users in the Arbitron Mobile German panel spent an average of 648 minutes10 hours and 48 minutesin January with instant messaging and chat applications, email services, and MMS or SMS functions and apps.
The nearly 11 hours in the month spent with messaging represents the most time versus all other smartphone applications and services used by German smartphone panelists.

Google apps occupy the number 3, 4, 5, and 6 positions in the top ten in terms of user penetration. From 49 to 71 percent of the German smartphone panelists used Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube in January. In terms of time spent with the apps, users of these offerings spent from 13 to 76 minutes a month with these Google apps, far less than users of Facebook, the number 2 app320 minutes/month and users of WhatsApp Messenger489 minutes/month.
Available insights into the behavior of German smartphone users in the Arbitron Mobile panel are included in previous releases regarding social media use, mobile VoIP use and mobile data consumption.
