The first series of documentaries from The Economist Films launched this week. The global current-affairs newspaper announced its video initiative in June with the premiere of two series pilots in New York London. Content from the division is designed to express The Economist's global outlook in the form of short documentaries, delivered via the publisher's social and digital platforms.
The first series, Global Compass, is a set of five films that captures the voice and identity of The Economist, providing analysis of current affairs with a global perspective. The five films cover topics such as prison reform, the right to die, health-care provision, drugs policy and alternative energy, and examine how different countries around the world are responding to these difficult policy challenges.
Launching the original pilots back in June, Nicholas Minter Green, president of Economist Films said, The work is the first fruit from an initiative to translate the world renowned Economist editorial into impactful and high end moving-image. We believe it will open up great possibilities to engage with our audience and commercial partners in a dynamic new way.
These films really capture the essence of The Economist, illustrating big global themes with detailed on-the-ground reporting, and a dash of humour, added Tom Standage, editorial lead, Economist Films and deputy editor, The Economist. This is an exciting new way for us to bring our distinctive editorial perspective to new audiences.
Virgin Unite, the charitable arm of Richard Branson's Virgin empire have come aboard as sponsors for the Global Compass series.
