AFI Conservatory Alumni Receive Five Oscar Nominations

With the Academy Award nominations revealed Thursday morning, the American Film Institute is proud to share the latest awards season accomplishments of AFI Conservatory alumni.

88th Academy Awards Nominations

Four AFI Conservatory alumni are among the 2016 Oscar nominees.

Director/writer Henry Hughes' AFI Conservatory thesis film DAY ONE received a Best Live Action Short nomination following an awards season winning streak that included the gold medal at the 2015 Student Academy Awards. DAY ONE is the 13th AFI Conservatory thesis film to receive an Oscar nomination, with three going on to win.

Producer Steve Golin received Best Picture nominations for both THE REVENANT and SPOTLIGHT; ANOMALISA director/producer Duke Johnson has been nominated for Best Animated Feature; and cinematographer Robert Richardson has been nominated for his work on THE HATEFUL EIGHT.

73rd Golden Globe Awards

Of the seven Conservatory alumni who received 2016 Golden Globe nominations, two alumni took top honors. MR. ROBOT executive producer/creator Sam Esmail and executive producer Steve Golin shared the Best Television Series - Drama award, while Golin also won the award for Best Motion Picture - Drama as a producer on THE REVENANT.

Thirty-nine alumni were among the creative ensembles behind the year's most outstanding films and television series honored at AFI AWARDS 2015, including: BRIDGE OF SPIES cinematographer Janusz Kami ski ; CAROL editor Affonso Gon alves ; HOMELAND executive producer/director Lesli Linka Glatter (AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women, Class of 1982) and executive producer/writer Gideon Raff ; MAD MEN director Jennifer Getzinger ; MR. ROBOT's Sam Esmail and Steve Golin, the latter of whom was also honored for SPOTLIGHT; STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON cinematographer Matthew Libatique ; and UNREAL co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro .

In this current awards season to date, AFI Conservatory graduates have also received: a Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award nomination; eight Producers Guild of America (PGA) Award nominations plus the PGA Stanley Kramer Award; three British Academy Film Award nominations; two 2016 Sundance Screenwriters Lab fellowships; two American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award nominations; two American Cinema Editors (ACE) Eddie Award nominations; 11 Critics' Choice Award nominations; four Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award nominations; two Gotham Awards; three Annie Award nominations; four Film Independent Spirit Award nominations; three Emmy Awards ; a historic sweep of the 2015 Student Academy Awards Narrative category's gold, silver and bronze prizes; and more.

The AFI Conservatory offers a two-year Master of Fine Arts degree in six filmmaking disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting.
