
Grass Valley and Cisco Collaborate on Integrated Solutions for Broadcast
Global strategic alliance combines Cisco Media Blueprint and Grass Valley media solutions
MONTREAL, April 17, 2016 Grass Valley, a Belden Brand, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Cisco to develop IP workflow solutions for broadcast that will improve customers business agility. The MOU creates an environment for widespread collaboration between the two companies, covering IP networking, virtualized computation and security solutions. Of particular note is the more immediate plan to develop a solution that combines the strengths of Grass Valleys Broadcast Data Center architecture with Cisco Media Blueprint solutions comprising IP-based, virtualized, and media-aware network infrastructure and applications based on open IP standards.
These are changing times, and broadcasters are looking for solutions that are powerful, yet interoperable and affordable, said Mike Cronk, senior vice president of strategic marketing, Grass Valley. Working closely with Cisco to develop IP solutions, especially ones that rely on the new virtualized network core, will provide our customers with enormous benefits as they look to improve their existing workflows or build new greenfield sites that help them take advantage of new business models and distribution schemes.
Grass Valley is a leader in providing IP solutions for broadcasters and supports IP connectivity across its portfolio. However, broadcasters have a desire to leverage the benefits of a traditional IT data center in order to realize the flexibility needed to grow and remain competitive. Grass Valleys solution suite, called the Broadcast Data Center, enables broadcasters to enjoy the scalability, reliability and fault tolerance of an IT data center without losing the broadcast-centric capabilities they require, such as vertically accurate switching, which is critical for multi-camera, live productions. Broadcast Data Center components such as GV Node and GV Convergent will be critical pieces of the collaboration with Cisco.
Together, we intend to enable the shift from proprietary appliances to open IP networking, helping broadcasters gain the benefits of a virtualized, media-aware network, said Steve Steinhilber, vice president, Vertical Partner Ecosystems, Cisco. Combining the Cisco Media Blueprint technologies and applications with the Grass Valley top-tier broadcast and production solutions, we can help broadcasters efficiently scale video production to deliver new content experiences faster, and drive revenue.
The two companies already have a long-standing relationship developing solutions for on-premise networks. An example of this is on display at the NAB Show 2016 and includes the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS), Nexus 9000 Series Switches and IP Fabric for Media, along with Grass Valleys GV Convergent IP Router Control and Configuration System, NVISION 8500 Router IP Gateway, GV Node Real Time IP Processing and Edge Routing Platform and the Densit 3 FR4 High-Density Modular Frame.
By working together on these collaborative solutions, Grass Valley and Cisco will provide broadcasters with an integrated offering from playout to transport over IP. As the industry makes the move to IP, the two companies are committed to creating solutions that solve the business problem of moving to IP without radically changing the workflow of the operator or saddling broadcasters with proprietary solutions that will add complexity and interoperability issues down the road.
The companies are demonstrating their joint IP workflow at NAB in the Grass Valley booth SL106 and the Cisco booth SU8502CM.
