VSF Meets the Increased Demand for Broadcast Interoperability over IP Networks

A new Specification for video transport over the Internet defines formats used in video delivery over IP

October 30, 2018 - The Video Services Forum [VSF] announces the availability of a Technical Recommendation TR-06-1 entitled Reliable Internet Stream Transport (RIST) Protocol Specification - Simple Profile. This new TR is freely available for all to download and to use at http://videoservicesforum.org/technical_recommendations.shtml

TR-06-1:2018 provides a protocol specification based on existing RFCs for low-latency video transport over the Internet, including the well-known ARQ (Automatic Repeat Query) technique. The TR-06-1 Specification can co-exist with SMPTE-2022-1/2 FEC.

The broadcast market demanded interoperability between vendors to grow the video contribution or distribution over the Internet. With VSF's TR-06-1, such interoperability is now possible. The VSF TR-06-1 specification allows for interoperability while giving room to each vendor to innovate on their specific implementations. In addition to the essential interoperability and protection, TR-06-1 also includes support for bit rate bonding, dynamic load sharing, and hitless protection.

A very successful multi-company demonstration was performed during the IBC 2018 tradeshow in Amsterdam. Artel, Cobalt Digital, DVEO, Evertz, Nevion, QVidium, VideoFlow and Zixi participated in this demonstration.

Work on RIST is ongoing. Future versions of the Specification will add features such as auto-configuration, encryption, VPN support, NAT traversal, and others.
