To some, he is the voice of the streets. To others, a gangster rapper. And while fragments of his life keep surfacing in headlines, the full picture remains incomplete: Who is Aykut Anhan - better known as Haftbefehl?
When Haftbefehl entered the German rap scene in 2010, he changed it for good. He became someone many young people could identify with and with his 2014 studio album Russisch Roulette, turned into a cultural press favorite. His 2022 release Das Schwarze Album, produced by Cologne-based Grimme Award winner Benjamin Bazzazian, is considered a milestone in German rap. But in 2023, things grew quieter around Haftbefehl
For two years directors Juan Moreno - an award-winning journalist (including Germany's Journalist of the Year and known for Tausend Zeilen L ge: Das System Relotius und der deutsche Journalismus) - and Sinan Sevin , a multiple award-winning filmmaker (including the Young Director Award in Cannes), followed Aykut Anhan with their cameras. Together with family, close companions, and Haftbefehl himself, they created Babo: The Haftbefehl Story: a rare and unadorned portrait of an artist at a turning point - radically authentic and unfiltered, just like the music that made him famous.
The documentary also marks the producing debut of actor Elyas M'Barek. What began as casual conversations between Elyas M'Barek and Aykut Anhan about a potential feature film evolved - on M'Barek's suggestion - into this documentary. As a creative mentor, M'Barek guided the project closely and co-producing it with Pacco-Luca Nitsche (The World's Most Dangerous Show) for their joint production company, 27 KM'B Pictures.

Because of his uncompromising authenticity, the career of Offenbach-born Aykut Anhan - aka Haftbefehl - reached unexpected heights. His music carries the rawness of his youth: poverty, crime, drugs, and violence were ever-present, flowing unfiltered into his lyrics.
The documentary Babo: The Haftbefehl-Story takes viewers deep into the world of Aykut Anhan, the man behind the artist persona Haftbefehl. It traces his rise to an icon, peels back the glittering fa ade of show business, and reveals a layered portrait of a man locked in a constant struggle with the demons of his past and present. Far from the clich s of street rap glorifying drugs or violence, the film uses powerful imagery to show how his childhood trauma has gradually pushed him towards the edge.
