Akin Omotosos Vaya up for 2018 Oscar consideration --

Nigeria-born South Africa-based filmmaker, Akin Omotoso, has been having a pretty great year. Just last month, his 2016 feature film, Vaya, won three awards at the Africa Movie Academy Awards including Best Director.
With all the goodwill Vaya has gathered since it premiered at TIFF, its no surprise that its been selected as one of South Africas submissions for Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
outh Africa has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film since 1989. Two of their submissions Yesterday and Tsotsi ended up nabbing nominations, with Gavin Hoods Tsotsi eventually taking home the Oscar in 2006.
Inspired by true events, Omotosos Vaya weaves together three separate stories to create a gripping yet compassionate portrait of small town characters immersed in the intimidating, alluring, and dangerous world of big city Johannesburg and Soweto.
While theres no news about if or when the movie will premiere in Nigeria, it will be getting a limited, Oscar-qualifying release on September 15 before a general release in South African cinemas on October 27.
