When it comes to remotely controlled specialty POV cameras, Marshall Electronics is one of the industry's more respected names. And POV cameras are increasingly part and parcel of live sports productions, whether game coverage, studio shows, or other programming. SVG recently spent some time with Bernie Keach, broadcast AV consultant, Marshall Electronics, to learn about what's new from Marshall Electronics and what customers are asking for.

What's new and exciting from Marshall?

We're showing a new concept for a track-and-zoom camera that has two lenses working with AI for tracking. The two lenses are talking to each other and following and framing the target; one of the lenses is also static, so it frames the whole scene. We'll have an NDI version of it available in January for about $3,000.

Marshall has integrated two cameras in one POV head: one allowing a wide shot of a studio desk, a PTZ camera that can handle closeups and other shots.

You mentioned the NDI network protocol. Are there other versions?

Yes, we aren't the largest NDI company in the world, but people like NDI a lot so we promote NDI; we promote Dante. We're agnostic.

We want to give the customer what they want: like our new CV355-27X-NDX optical zoom camera, which is available for NDI version, and the CV355-27X-IP version, which has HEVC and SRT. Both have the 27X optical zoom and can go in a number of places like for a beauty shot camera or up in the ceiling.

How has tracking technology evolved?

When we came out with our tracking camera, the first question was, why would I want a tracking camera? Customers said they were afraid of a tracking camera or didn't need a tracking camera. Now those same customers say they can't live without tracking.

And is it tracking limbs or faces?

It uses facial recognition but also understands the situation. If talent is walking over to a monitor or whiteboard, it will open up wide to show the monitor or whiteboard.

Marshall is also known for smaller cameras as well. What's new on that side of things?

Yes, the world runs on Marshall Mini POV cameras. One thing we have introduced is a controller that can handle up to 70 cameras and [allows you to] mix and match cameras out in the field. Previously, our limit was 10 cameras, and the unit can fit in a standard camera-control system in a truck and handle cameras [from different manufacturers].

How is AI and, potentially, generative AI impacting your business?

We have a PTZ camera that has AI in it: it can track and frame, and now it can also start to tell what people are doing in the frame, like if someone is sleeping. We're not using generative AI yet, but we'll have to see how things develop.
