Tickets for the 8th RT Radio 1 Folk Awards are now on sale via Ticketmaster. The awards will take place at 7.30pm in Vicar Street, Dublin on Tuesday 10th November.

The RT Radio 1 Folk Awards will be hosted by RT 's John Creedon and will be broadcast live on RT Radio 1 (from 8.00pm) and on the RT Listen App, while a highlights programme will be broadcast on RT One and RT Player on Saturday 14th November. The RT Radio 1 Folk Awards are a celebration of the very best in folk music in Ireland.

The shortlist of nominees in each category will be announced next week. Seven awards are made each year as a result of voting by the independent Folk Awards Jury. These are:

Best Original Folk Track

Best Traditional Folk Track

Best Folk Singer

Best Emerging Folk Artist

Best Folk Instrumentalist

Best Folk Group

Best Folk Album

Two awards are made each year as a result of deliberations by the Folk Awards Steering Committee. Those are:

Lifetime Achievement: An award given to a living artist who has made a significant contribution to Irish folk music over a period of many years. Previous honourees include D nal Lunny, Mary Black, Christy Moore and Moya Brennan.

Hall of Fame: An award given to a person no longer living who made a significant contribution to Irish folk music during their lifetime. Previous recipients include R ise Rua, S amus Ennis, Paddy Moloney and Sarah Makem. The award this year will go to Dolores Keane.

RT RADIO 1 FOLK AWARDS HALL OF FAME DOLORES KEANE

Dolores Keane will be inducted into the RT Radio 1 Folk Awards Hall of Fame at the awards event in Vicar Street on Tuesday 10th November. Dolores Keane, who passed away in March this year, was one of the defining voices of Irish folk and traditional music, celebrated for her rich, expressive singing and her lifelong commitment to preserving Ireland's musical heritage. Raised in Caherlistrane, Co. Galway, she grew up immersed in the sean-n s tradition and made her first recording for Radio ireann at the age of five. She co-founded the influential traditional group De Danann in 1975. The group enjoyed considerable national and international success at a time when Irish folk and trad was going through a new awakening, helping to bring Irish folk music to new audiences at home and abroad, and the band scored a hit in Ireland in 1975 with the album The Rambling Irishman and later with the very successful albums, Anthem and Ballroom.

She released her debut solo album, There Was a Maid in 1978. However, it was in the early 90s that she enjoyed new heights of popularity with the albums Dolores Keane and A Lion in a Cage, the lead single of which was her first Irish No 1 hit.

Keane further extended her popularity and impact through her participation in A Woman's Heart, the landmark collection that became the biggest-selling album in Irish history. Renowned for memorable interpretations of songs such as Caledonia and Galway Bay, she was praised by fellow musicians for the emotional depth and authenticity of her voice (late American singer Nanci Griffith saying that Dolores Keane, the queen of the soul of Ireland, has a sacred voice ). Open about her personal struggles and admired by a new generation of artists, she remained a respected ambassador for Irish folk and traditional music throughout her life, releasing her final song, The Refuge in 2023. In inducting Dolores Keane into the Hall of Fame, the RT Radio 1 Folk Awards will celebrate her legacy as a great ambassador and guardian of Ireland's sacred folk and traditional music traditions.
