03-06-2014 SGL Group presents innovative carbon fiber products at the JEC Europe 2014 JEC premier: Presentation of a new thermoplastic-compatible SIGRAFIL C carbon fiber

Wiesbaden, Germany, Thursday, March 6, 2014. At this years JEC Europe in Paris, SGL Group The Carbon Company will present innovative, carbon fiber-based product solutions for strategic growth industries including automotive, sports and industrial applications. Products and applications along the entire value chain will be on display, from precursors and carbon fibers, fabrics, braided products and prepregs to finished structural elements.

SGL Group will debut its most recently developed product, a thermoplastic-compatible heavy-tow carbon fiber, which is essential for producing fiber composite materials with a thermoplastic matrix. A new surface coating (sizing) has been developed to optimally bond the carbon fiber to the thermoplastic matrix. The special properties of carbon fiber, such as high strength and stiffness, are thereby fully transmitted to thermoplastic components.

According to Burkhard Straube, Chairman of the Business Unit Carbon Fibers & Composite Materials at SGL Group, "With this new product, we are introducing a carbon fiber to the market that is specifically made for material systems with a thermoplastic matrix. Its enhanced overall performance opens up new fields in which our clients can apply high performance composite materials based on carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics.

Thermoplastic fiber composite materials generate new applications for the consumer goods market in industries such as electronics and home appliances as well as in series production in the automobile industry. Short cycle times in production and weldability of components significantly contribute to increased efficiency. These materials are also easily repaired and recycled.

At this year's JEC, SGL Group will showcase its wide ranging portfolio that features the many applications of its high quality carbon fiber products.
