TVBAwards Outstanding Broadcast: the finalists

One of the highlights of this week's TVBAwards will be the announcement of the Outstanding Broadcast winner. The honour is one of four Special Awards, which highlight a series of worthy disciplines including innovation and r&d, start-up businesses and entrepreneurs, PR and marketing teams, and sustainability. A shortlist of entries has been drawn up for for the award, and the winner - judged by an independent panel - will be announced at the event this Thursday 22 October.

French broadcast service provider AMP Visual TV has received its second nomination for a TVBAward, for the enhanced coverage it provided for the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris horse racing event. The team used the X10 UHD RF ultra motion wireless system developed by I-MOVIX to shoot ultra slow-motion sequences at 800fps in HD. For the large-scale production, four mobile units and more than seventy operators were involved. One of the mobile units was dedicated to the RF operation, with the I- MOVIX system's camera interface located in the truck where it could receive the signals arriving from the camera several kilometres away.

Also nominated for the Outstanding Broadcast award are Live U and Sky News, for their coverage of the UK general election. The broadcaster delivered 138 live IP feeds from 150 key counts and constituencies countrywide using LiveU's cellular uplinking technology. The 138 LiveU transmission units were paired with Sony PJ620 Handycams, each manned by a media students and journalists. This was in addition to 49 traditional OB trucks providing live feeds to the newsroom. An SD proxy of all 138 LiveU feeds was routed to Osterley over IP, via 138 cloud- based LU2000 MMH servers, each cloud server also steaming its feed live to a YouTube Live Event.

SIS Live was central to the production and delivery of the live social media broadcast of an hour-long moving open-topped bus concert in central London by Jessie J, which has landed it a TVBAward nomination. Each segment of the McDonald's I'mlovinit24 campaign was streamed live through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. SIS Live was responsible for multi-camera filming, mixing live music and vision on the bus itself, and streaming continuous footage as it moved along the busy London streets.

Finally, ORF, EBU, Lawo are in the running for the Outstanding Broadcast award, for the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest. Austria's national broadcaster ORF implemented complex file-based workflows for AV recording and distribution of the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest to 80 countries worldwide. In addition to the spectators in the hall, the final shows were watched by almost 200 million viewers from 80 countries - which included China for the first time in the event's history - and topped its 2014 viewing figures by around two million viewers.

The winners of each of the 17 TVBAwards will be announced at a ceremony this week at the Bloomsbury Ballroom. Tickets are still available, and include a drinks reception, dinner and awards presentation, and an after party.
