CBC'ers Help Walk For Hope

Several CBCers took part in the 2018 Walk For Hope on Sunday, October 14, 2018, helping support those struggling with mental illness in the process. Both WRAL-TV and WRAL-FM were once again proud sponsors of the event.

MIX 101.5s Two Men and a Mom Kyle Smelser, Bryan Lord and Sarah King emceed the Walk For Hope, taking part for the third year in a row.

We love the WFH! said King. It is such a fun day. Theres great food and music, and of course the proceeds going to mental health research in NC is huge! Its important because mental health is often stigmatized, and doesnt get not only the attention but the funding that it needs.

King was happy to cheerlead the cause again in 2018.

For 30 years, Walk for Hope the Foundation has awarded over $5.7 million in research grants! she explained. Every year the crowd at the Walk grows larger, as does the awareness of mental illness and the funds need to help fight it.

WRAL-TV Reporter Amanda Lamb took part for the first time this year.

I had heard about it before, and it never worked out with my schedule, except for this year! she explained. I ran in the 10K which was a small, but fast group. I think its a very important cause to support. Never before in our culture have we had so many people struggling with different forms of mental illness. It touches everyones lives. They need our support.

WRAL-TV Anchor/Reporter Ken Smith and his wife, also named Amanda, have become regular at the Walk for Hope over the past couple of years. They walked the 5K.

I believe in this cause and working to eliminate the stigma associated with mental health, he said. Its a beautiful walk through scenic Umstead Park. Walk for Hope does just that, gives people and families dealing with mental illness, hope. It lets people know that they are not alone and there are plenty of helpful resources.
