GoPro for a Cause Spotlight: Celebrating World Gorilla Day with Angela + Lulingu

To celebrate Word Gorilla Day 2023, we're sharing the story of two very special gorillas-Angela, a western lowland gorilla born at the Los Angeles Zoo-and Lulingu, a Grauer's gorilla born in the wilds of Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Angela is the first gorilla born at the LA Zoo in over 20 years, and she lives with her mother, father, and other members of her troop in the zoo's gorilla habitat. She's the youngest member of her troop and is playful and curious. An ambassador for her species, she helps educate visitors about the importance of gorilla conservation.

In 2018, GoPro for a Cause shared Lulingu's story and how she was orphaned when poachers killed her family. She was rescued and rehabilitated by a dedicated team of caregivers at a wildlife sanctuary, the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE), and now Lulingu spends her days exploring the forest with members of her troop, searching for fruit, and playing in the treetops.

Gorillas are the largest of the apes and one of our closest relatives, sharing approximately 98% of our human DNA. These highly intelligent apes capture our imagination with their imposing size, yet shy and gentle ways. But gorillas are critically endangered-falling victim to habit destruction and poaching.

Get involved

There are many ways to get involved and help protect endangered gorillas. The LA Zoo is releasing a new children's book, Angela & Lulingu, Two Gorillas, A World Apart, inspiring a new generation to care about gorillas and their future. A portion of proceeds from the sale of this book will support GRACE's work.

You can donate directly to the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE):

$15 provides a week's supply of formula for one infant gorilla.

$50 provides a day's worth of food and care for one adult gorilla.

$200 helps deter poaching and protects wild habitat.
