Teradek and BlueFrame Technology Validate SRT for Reliable Video Transport Across Unstable Networks
GOLDEN, Colo. Aug. 28, 2017 Wowza Media Systems , the recognized gold standard in streaming, today announced the support of SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) with a new update to its Wowza Streaming Engine software, with version 4.7.2. As an open source alternative to expensive and proprietary video transport technologies, customers can now use SRT to ingest high quality video across sub-optimal networks, into any Wowza Streaming Engine origin server for delivery. The inclusion of SRT also reinforces the reliability for streams originating in networks with high congestion or low bandwidth availability.
In recent benchmark tests of SRT, Wowza noted greater reliability of throughput and packet loss, and improved bandwidth utilization when encountering network bandwidth fluctuations. In long-haul transport of video from Germany to Australia, using a consumer DSL connection, testing showed a 7.5x increase of throughput with SRT, compared to RTMP connections over TCP.

Today we conducted a test stream from a Cube 755 encoder with SRT to Wowza Streaming Engine, and despite 10% packet loss, the feed arrived perfectly clean and clear. The technology is absolutely groundbreaking.
The addition of SRT to our Wowza Streaming Engine workflows enables customers to more reliably deliver low-latency video from anywhere, said Chris Knowlton, Partner and Chief Strategy Officer at BlueFrame Technology. This is especially true at remote and older venues, where production teams are routinely broadcasting over limited-bandwidth networks and cellular data connections.
SRT can deliver seamlessly across the technology stack, with fixed end-to-end latency that doesn't build up over time. The protocol offers an alternative to TCP connections through a reliable UDP transport solution with packet loss recovery; end-to-end security with AES encryption; network health monitoring between endpoints; and simplified firewall traversal.
