Jonathan Wyner, an associate professor in Berklees Music Production and Engineering Department, has been appointed to the position of president-elect of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), beginning in 2020. He will assume the role of president in 2021.
AES has a history of 70 years as the meeting place for all things audio, said Wyner. It's home for manufacturers, thought leaders, educators, and practitioners doing cutting-edge research, and for those who share a passion for great sound. I look forward to bringing energy to the drive towards the future of audio, and reimagining the way we capture and interact with sound.
As cochair of the U.S.-based international convention, Wyner has worked to increase diversity and inclusion across the program by gender, genre, and interest, resulting in programs that now range from EDM, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic instrument design to student- and educator-focused sessions from Women's Audio Mission and SoundGirls. As president, Wyner will continue to move the needle forward on these efforts and others.
Jonathan's deep commitment to education, new technologies, and diverse audiences will help him lead the AES with invaluable insights, said iZotope CEO Mark Ethier. This election is well deserved, and we look forward to him being part of the society's continued evolution and success.
Wyner is chief engineer at M Works Mastering and education director for iZotope in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A musician and performer, he has mastered and produced more than 5,000 recordings over 30 years. His credits include James Taylor, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Kiri Te Kanawa, Aimee Mann B.M. 80, Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk, Pink Floyd, Cream, Bruce Springsteen, and Nirvana.
He produced the Grammy-nominated soundtrack for the PBS special Invention & Alchemy by Deborah Henson-Conant, on which he also served as creative director for the video program. He mastered the first recording of the full-length opera Madame Butterfly for the BBC, and designed audio for Play it By Ear, the first interactive CD game for Rykodisc. In 2012, he authored Audio Mastering: Essential Practices, published by Hal Leonard/Berklee Press.
Wyner lectures on music and audio topics around the world, and has presented with George Massenburg, Doug Sax, and Bob Ludwig, among others.
