Former Western Cape Premier Peter Marais joins FF Plus to fight for Afrikaans'

The leader of the FF Plus, Dr Groenewald announced on 22 January that Peter Marais would be the Freedom Front Plus' Western Cape Premier Candidate.

As reported by Andisiwe Makinana from Times Live, Marais' decision to run as FF+ candidate came after numerous probing conversations with the party's leadership.

Marais said the nomination is an honour as it offers [him] the opportunity to pursue and ultimately achieve the ideals and goals that he is committed to.

Peter Marais' political history Marais resigned from politics 14 years ago, but says that many people have asked him to consider re-entering the political arena. Marais served as the Mayor of Cape Town from 2000 to 2001, and as the Premier of the Western Cape from 2001 until 2002.

He was also the Leader of The People's Congress Party from 1984 until 1994, and the Leader of the New Labour Party from 2004 until 2009. Both parties no longer exist.

Marais has now returned to politics to fight for Afrikaans, for self-determination and for Christian values alongside the Freedom Front Plus.

Endorsed by FF+ leader, Dr Groenewald After the announcement, Dr Groenewald said Marias' appointment shows that the Freedom Front Plus is the growing alternative for South Africans. He added:

It shows that the FF Plus is serious about reaching out to minorities. [ ] The FF Plus's door is open to anyone who can align themselves with the party's policy, principles and values and the FF Plus is the only party in South Africa that offers minorities a refuge and fights back for a better future for all.

South Africa's political landscape is busy changing and by cooperating with minority groups, the FF Plus will play an increasingly important role in replacing the ANC as part of a coalition government so as to ensure a better future for all in our country.

The former Premier made headlines back in 2004 when Freda Adams, a former provincial Social Services minister, sued Marais R2.3 million for defamation and sexual harassment.

For the defamation charge, Marais was ordered to pay R42 000 over to Adams after he claimed that she had a sexual relationship with her driver. However, the judge found there was insufficient evidence for the harassment charge.
