Training Powered by Data

As we start 2021 following one of the most challenging years in aviation's history, it's a good time to look back at how the industry has overcome the many obstacles presented by COVID-19. Despite the impact COVID-19 has had on pilot training, it has helped to create an era of change that will help shape a positive future.

Throughout the pandemic, we have had to become more agile in our approach to delivering training which has seen a huge increase in virtual training. Although many have missed the traditional classroom environment, this change creates the ability to provide training that's more flexible and cost-efficient to both the trainee and airline. It has also allowed for some training to continue under these exceptional circumstances that may not have been possible in the traditional training center environment. As with any change, this comes new challenges that we must adapt to. For example, we must ensure we develop this new remote environment to maintain engagement between both the trainee and instructor.

Moving forward, our focus will shift towards our data in training vision. Working alongside our training technology experts, we will collect and analyse more data produced during training via a range of devices and tools available to the instructor and trainee. This data will provide instructors with a deeper understanding of trainee's competencies, enabling a more bespoke training experience with improved training outcomes.

The data that we collect will also inform the development of new training programs and technologies. With the shift towards adopting remote training, we can expect new immerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). To ensure these new technologies deliver value, L3Harris will utilize data collected during training to inform the development of these new tools. With the next generation of pilots coming through, these newer types of technologies will become more valuable, particularly with the younger demographic who typically respond better to more technology-based resources.

We still have many challenges ahead, however with new advancements in the way we deliver training, and the introduction of new training technologies, we will be able to develop pilots who will effectively support the industry recovery.
