Linear television is short-lived by default, or at the very least its broadcasting is. Our production team or a third party might work for months to create audiovisual content to reach our screens only for only some minutes. However, TV channels never lose sight of this content, as they record a copy of everything they broadcast: We are referring to broadcast recording for legal purposes or legal copy. In this blog, we will explain what is it and why it's essential for any broadcaster.
Creating a wealthy archive with our own content
Obviously, it doesn't seem wise to let our content loose in the infinite space once it is broadcasted. It would be like loading a gun with only one shot when the current technology allows you to have several attempts. Among other things, one of the aims of the legal copy for the channels is to build their own media archive little by little. An archive that will probably be useful in their day-to-day activity, even in the short term.
For example, imagine that our morning show interviewed an important politician who made a meaningful quote. Thanks to the legal copy and our media archive, our news team has immediate access to this fragment, and they can use it to illustrate the news in any program of the channel.
If we want to take advantage of this solution, we must integrate our legal copy system with our MAM system. Monitoring software like VSNBroadrec can take care of the legal copy. The flexibility of this technology allows to set segments for the recording to create a manageable file. For example, we can set VSNBroadrec to generate a file for each hour of broadcasting.
Once this file is created, the content is automatically ingested, cataloged and stored in our archive, thanks to the integration with VSNExplorer MAM. Our Archive department uses this media asset management system to provide the correct metadata and make it easier for our professionals to recover this content. With VSNExplorer MAM, the media is available again after its broadcast quickly and efficiently.
However, we can't only think about the short term. Many of the traditional TV broadcasters have been recording their broadcast for years. Thanks to this activity, their archive is a treasure. For example, the BBC Archive has held TV materials from their main shows since the 50s. Another public broadcaster that counts with a magnific archive is RTVE, which uses VSN's Artificial Intelligence to provide smart content cataloging for its historical media files.
Despite this helpful feature, monitoring and recording multiple channels of big groups like BBC and RTVE can be a challenge for our monitoring system. Not for VSNBroadrec, as it allows to record 32 channels simultaneously, no matter if it's radio, TV, MPEG, Transport Stream, YouTube Live, Instagram, or Facebook Live. Furthermore, we can monitor all of them via streaming.
Recording for legal compliance
Linear TVs don't produce this legal copy only as a resource despite its editorial value. In many countries, broadcasters have a legal mandate to keep records of everything they air in their archives. For example, TV channels in the European Union must store this legal copy for six months to a year since its first airing.
This legal obligation is triggered by the possibility that the content may be prosecuted on copyright grounds or related to individual honor and privacy issues. Therefore, a monitoring system like VSNBroadrec can play an essential role in an audiovisual corporation. Preserve that copy is not only a legal mandate, but it might also become proof that our company didn't do anything wrong.
In addition, if we need to modify our content for any legal reason, we can quickly edit our media from the same VSNExplorer MAM interface. This media asset management system integrates the add-on Wedit, a web video editor that allows users to carry edition workflows like video cut editions. Therefore, we can erase a problematic piece of content and store our audiovisual content efficiently in our storage.
The legal copy is a must for a TV channel, both for legal protection and to get the most out of the content aired by our company. Knowing that monitoring systems are essential, we can take advantage of an efficient integration with our media asset management system provided by VSNBroadrec. If you want to know more about this kind of integration, book a demo with our professionals. Don't let your content lose itself in the sands of time.
