London, April 2, 2015 - Thomas Campbell from IP&TV News interviewed Pascal Marie, Product Management & Partners, NexGuard:
IP&TV News: What are the main content protection challenges presented by the need to deliver content to multiple devices?
Pascal Marie: The world we now live in demands a seamless experience across all devices including tablets, PCs, connected TVs and beyond. In order to do this, operators must implement a diverse range of Digital Rights Management (DRM) solutions that ensure content can be downloaded and streamed securely. However, the proliferation of open platforms means that there are many ways in which content can be recaptured on or at the output of consumer devices. Even premium UHD content delivered to a set-top-box (STB) or connected TV can be illicitly shared in high quality by using a consumer 4K camcorder. This is why it is essential to have complementary content protection solutions such as watermarking, which can ensure content can be traced easily.
How can Civolution's NexGuard help solve the problems inherent in these areas?
Civolution's NexGuard provides the missing piece of the puzzle for content owners who want to disrupt content and service theft. Hollywood studios have recognized the value of the NexGuard technology since forensic marking was mandated for digital cinemas 10 years ago. Real-time per-session watermarking for Over-The-Top (OTT) services can be added during content preparation and streaming, ensuring that the piece of content is uniquely watermarked before being delivered to the user's screen regardless of device or DRM.
Can you give us an active example of how forensic watermarking operates?
The NexGuard-Streaming solution for multiscreen services has proved effective at reducing piracy for both live and Video-on-Demand (VOD) content. For example, our technology is deployed by OTT and VOD providers such as Wuaki.TV, ensuring that they can offer premium quality content on their service while complying with the content industry's security and picture quality requirements.
The NexGuard video watermarking solution traces a registered user gaining access to a movie, and integrates a unique identification based on the series of video fragments streamed from the Content Delivery Network (CDN) to the user's device. When content rights are violated, the culprit can be automatically traced by the NexGuard detection solution. Such session-based watermarking also acts as a deterrent against content sharing.
Looking ahead, what do you think the next big security challenges will be for on-demand and live content?
Pirates are using new methods such as cost-free Peer-to-Peer (P2P) to steal and share content, including live re-streaming of HD video, so that content protection will need to adapt if it wants to remain effective. For premium live content such as sport, it is already becoming almost essential to cover all bases, including multiscreen and STB-based services. Forensic watermarking can be utilized for both OTT and broadcast distribution of live content and detection can happen on the fly, so that the source of piracy is quickly identified while the content is being streamed illegally. This means that the legitimate stream received by the rogue subscriber can be degraded or stopped almost immediately, which is much more effective than issuing multiple takedown notices to sharing sites.
Finally, you'll be appearing at TV Connect. There are a lot of events out there - but what distinguishes this one?
It's a well-targeted event in Western Europe and attracts an impressive array of forward thinking European and global speakers and panelists from across the TV industry, spanning a range of topics and streams. The event will bring together industry experts in a series of conferences and panels to discuss the latest developments in 4K, cloud TV, multiscreen, OTT, TV Everywhere, VOD and more, which all require effective content protection solutions such as ours. By providing a single hub for the entire industry, it acts as the ideal place to create, maintain and enhance brand awareness while gauging market reaction with a relevant audience.
