Why is Carrier ID Needed?

With the increasing amount of data being transmitted over satellite, signal interference has been a growing problem. To mitigate this interference, the industry has backed the Carrier ID (DVB-CID) standard to greatly reduce the time needed to resolve satellite interference occurrences. At a minimum, Carrier ID requires a Global Unique Identifier (GUI) and can contain additional information such as GPS coordinates and contact information to ease the process of fixing Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) events.

Published in May 2013 as the ETSI TS 103 129 standard, industry-wide adoption officially began in January 2015. On June 1st, 2016, the FCC will begin requiring satellite signals to contain Carrier ID information.
