Iconic South African film and arts critic and writer Barry Ronge has died at age 74 in Johannesburg.

Ronge who retired in 2014, died on Sunday, 3 July at home in the arms of his life partner Albertus van Dyk, but The Buz Factor publicist Bridget Van Oerle told eNCA that he only wanted his death only be officially announced a week after his passing.

Barry Ronge and Van Dyk were a couple for 45 years Ronge and Van Dyk had been a couple for the past 45 years.

Albertus is obviously very, very sad. It's a huge loss. They were together for 45 years. They had an incredible relationship.

Barry Ronge was born in Hillbrow, Johannesburg and grew up on the West Rand where he attended the Florida Park High School.

He completed his studies at the University of the Witwatersrand after which he began a teaching career at St. John's College, followed by a 10-year stint as a lecturer in literature at the University of the Witwatersrand.

In the late 1980s he was the food critic for the now-defunct Sunday Times Metro supplement, writing Barry's Bites, and was Sandton Living magazine's food critic under the pseudonym Ms Rebecca Parker.

Ronge is best known for his Spit and Polish column in the Sunday Times, his movie reviews for the same newspaper, and his Sunday evening show on Radio 702.

After writing for the Sunday Times for 27 years, he wrote his last column on 23 February 2014.

In 2015, the Sunday Times renamed its prize for South African literature to the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize.

Barry Ronge (74) has passed away. Barry was a renowned journalists and broadcaster and worked for 702 for many years.
