METLIFE NAMED EPA ENERGY STAR PARTNER OF THE YEAR NEW YORK, April 22, 2020 MetLife, Inc. (NYSE: MET) today announced that it has received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award for the second consecutive year, in recognition of its support for energy efficiency.

We're proud to receive this recognition and will continue exploring innovative energy solutions in partnership with EPA.

The ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award recognizes MetLife's efforts to benchmark and certify both corporate office properties and investment properties using EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. It also recognizes the company's work to promote energy efficiency practices and ENERGY STAR resources to all its stakeholders.

In 2019, MetLife committed to ENERGY STAR certifications for more than 12 million square feet of real estate across its corporate office network and the portfolio managed by MetLife Investment Management, its institutional asset management platform. On average, buildings with an ENERGY STAR certification use 35 percent less energy than a typical building.

Environmental sustainability is a key priority for the properties we develop, acquire, hold and manage within our real estate portfolio, said Robert Merck, Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Real Estate and Agriculture for MetLife Investment Management. We will continue leveraging ENERGY STAR products, technologies, materials, design principles, and construction methods to save energy.

As part of this commitment, MetLife has developed real-time energy dashboards for more than 110 investment properties to actively monitor ENERGY STAR scores, performance metrics, and certification status. The company also hosted the EcoChallenge, which engaged 2,000 employees across 28 countries to avoid the equivalent of 30,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, save 75,000 gallons of water, and change more than 400 light bulbs to higher-efficiency or ENERGY STAR models.

MetLife has long been a corporate leader on sustainability. For example:

MetLife was the first U.S.-based insurance company to achieve carbon neutrality.

MetLife has earned a spot on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index four years in a row.

MetLife has also received a Leadership grade (A-) on climate change in the CDP Investor Report four years in a row.

This year, the U.S. Department of Energy recognized MetLife for the energy efficiency improvements the company has made as part of the Better Buildings Initiative.
