Every day, we rely on products to work safely, from the power bank in your bag to the solar panels on rooftops. Behind that trust is a process called conformity assessment. It's how manufacturers and regulators check that products, systems and services meet agreed standards. IEC supports all three types of conformity assessment - first to third party - and runs its own global systems for the highest level of trust.
First-party conformity assessment Here, the manufacturer or supplier declares that their product meets a standard. This is called an SDoC (supplier's declaration of conformity), which is a formal way of saying, we've tested it and it complies. Many everyday electronics, like chargers or LED bulbs, start their life this way. The only catch is that the trust you place in the product depends on the credibility of the supplier.
Second-party conformity assessment This offers more assurance because it's carried out by someone with a direct interest in the product, such as a large buyer, a manufacturer, or a government agency. These organizations often have their own checks to make sure suppliers meet agreed requirements before they buy. It's a safeguard to confirm that the first party has done its job properly.
Third-party conformity assessment This offers the highest level of trust and confidence. It involves an independent organization that has no stake in the outcome. Because it's impartial and normally follows internationally agreed procedures, it offers the highest confidence of all.
IEC Conformity Assessment Systems IEC operates the world's only globally standardized systems for third-party conformity assessment in electrotechnology. These systems cover everything from household appliances to renewable energy and form the largest multilateral agreement of its kind. They make it easier for businesses to trade and, most importantly, give people confidence that the technology they use is safe and reliable.
How it works The IEC Conformity Assessment Systems bring order and trust to a complex world. They provide a global framework of shared rules and practices, so everyone works to the same standards. Within this framework, professional bodies - such as testing laboratories and certification organizations - carry out the assessments. These bodies, called CABs (conformity assessment bodies), follow strict IEC rules and are regularly reviewed by their peers to keep standards high.
This system ensures that results mean the same thing everywhere. If a product is tested and certified in one participating country, those results are recognized by all the others. No repetition. No extra costs. Just faster, safer global trade.
The IEC operates four specialist systems: IECEE, IECEx, IECQ, and IECRE. Each focuses on a different area of electrotechnology, from electrical equipment and explosive atmospheres to quality and renewable energy. Their shared goal is simple but powerful: one test, one certification and, when needed, one mark that's valid worldwide.
