The Academy Awards (Oscars) nominations for 2019 will be announced via live stream on Tuesday 22 January.

The nomination show will be hosted by comedian Kumail Nanjiani, the star and writer of The Big Sick, and actress Tracee Ellis Ross, who stars in the hit comedy series Black-ish.

The entire show can be watched via the Academy's live stream embedded below, with the show set to start at 15:20 SAST.

The 2019 Oscars ceremony will be broadcast live on 24 February from 03:00 on DSTV (Channel TBD).

The Academy has yet to name a host for the 91st Oscars show.

A source within the Academy told the Mirror: There has been a lot of interest from within the industry offering up names of potential hosts. Nothing has been decided yet.

All options are open, including going without a host or some variation of multiple hosts.

Among the expected frontrunners for the best film category are popular musically themed movies A Star is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody.

There is some suggestions that Superhero film Black Panther could earn a surprise nod from the academy who normally shun blockbusters based on comic books.

Continuing a theme that could run through the Oscars, Rami Malek and Bradley Cooper are considered virtual certainties to earn a nomination for their roles in Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born.

In the best actress category Lady Gaga and Glenn Close are currently the favourites to take home an Oscar. Gaga could also be nominated for best song for the original track she recorded for A Star is Born. Close tied with Gaga at the Critic's Choice awards for her turn in the Wife.

A Star is Born is expected to lead the way in the nominations with insiders predicting it could pick up as many as eleven nods. Black Panther is expected to earn its fair share of nominations as well alongside period drama The Favourite.
