XLNTSOUND Elevates Video Production with Blackmagic Design

Audio company upgrades workflow with Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and ATEM Mini Pro ISO.

Blackmagic Design today announced that XLNTSOUND, a rapidly growing music production education brand and a leading voice in the EDM creator community, has upgraded its studio workflow using Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K digital film cameras and ATEM Mini Pro ISO live production switcher. The setup has helped expand XLNTSOUND's content capabilities across YouTube and its flagship podcast, as well as streamlined post production.

Founded in 2017 by music producers Parker Ament and Danny Ferrare, LA based XLNTSOUND was built on the idea of helping the music production community succeed by bringing accessible, entertaining and high quality educational content to producers. What began with fun and educational videos quickly grew into working with artists like Timbaland, Jauz, DVBBS, Nitti, Kash Doll and more. Most recently, Ament and Ferrare launched a popular EDM podcast that has featured guests like Afrojack, Dillon Francis, KSHMR and Getter.

As demand for their content grew, Ament and Ferrare turned to Blackmagic Design to improve their production value and efficiency, adding two Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6Ks and an ATEM Mini Pro ISO for podcast sessions and YouTube shoots. During each podcast shoot, the ATEM records ISO feeds, creating DaVinci Resolve project files for post production, while each camera captures higher resolution, 4K DCI files. Each camera records to SSDs and uses microphones connected directly to the cameras for audio isolation and simplified syncing.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is perfect for us. It offers much higher resolution than what we were using, as well as nonstop recording, which is a major factor, and it has the versatility we need for all types of content, said Ament. The recent autofocus build has been amazing. We use it more in our main filming studio, and it really helps, especially with two people on screen at once. It also creates so much more depth which we absolutely love!

After each shoot, media is transferred to a master drive and opened in DaVinci Resolve Studio, where the ATEM generated timeline is automatically populated. The proxy recordings are then swapped for the higher resolution originals.

The ATEM has been a complete game changer, Ament noted. We can see all our shots clearly, make live cuts, and know the project will be perfectly organized for Resolve. Not having to sync audio after the fact saves so much time.

The move to a Blackmagic Design production workflow led XLNTSOUND to fully transition to DaVinci Resolve Studio for post production. We recently switched to Resolve because of its native support of Blackmagic RAW, and our editors have come to prefer Resolve as well, explained Ament. Having the exact camera LUTs available natively has been crucial.

Ament also noted that Blackmagic Design's integrated camera and ATEM workflow gives them a familiar, audio style production pipeline while dramatically improving their production capabilities.

We're just two super down to earth guys that want to help the producer community as much as possible. Being audio guys first, going deep into the video world felt daunting, he said. But the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K and ATEM setup was much easier than we thought. The workflow feels familiar, almost like audio routing, and it gives us a professional level image quality and a reliable system for long form content like our podcast, saving us hours in post production.

With the Blackmagic Design workflow in place, XLNTSOUND is now planning to expand into live streaming. We've been loving all the upgrades to our video quality and can't wait to build out a dedicated Blackmagic live rig, concluded Ament. We always dreamed of having a pro caliber Blackmagic setup, and everything has been super seamless since making the switch. We won't be looking back.
