Child Protection Week 2019 - What you need to know

The South African government based the legislation for National Child Protection Week (CPW) on the United Convention of Rights of the Child, as well as the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the Constitution.

The legislation aims to mobilise all sectors of society to ensure that children receive the care and protection they need.

The Minister of Social Development is tasked with enforcing the campaign. However, every citizen should take responsibility when it comes to creating a safe environment for children.

Protecting children from violence, exploitation and abuse is not only a basic value but also an obligation clearly set out in Article 28 of the South African Constitution.

2019's themeThis year's theme is Let us Protect All Children to Move South Africa Forward . Furthermore, the week-long campaign focuses on observing, protecting and promoting the rights of the child.

Key areas of concern include child trafficking for child labour and sexual exploitation, as well as children in conflict with the law, children living and working in the streets.

In addition, child poverty and access to educational opportunities for children with disabilities also need attention. As well as the undocumented and unaccompanied children in society.

Details of Child Protection eventsDuring the coming week, the government will spearhead activities and initiatives focused on matters that affect the welfare and well-being of South African children.

Specific focus will also be given to the most vulnerable children, including children with disabilities. The campaign will kick off with the commemoration of the International Children's Day on 1 June.
