Four Corners, South Africa s official submission to the 86th Academy Awards (Best Foreign Language Film) has been nominated in the category The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa at the annual Design Indaba Expo, which will be held in February in Cape Town.

The movie is the first feature film to be nominated for the Design Award and will compete against nominees in various fields of art, sculpture and jewellery design for a Most Beautiful Object in South Africa Award (MBOISA).

Established in 1995, the Design Indaba Institution has developed into an annual Conference and Expo in Cape Town. Globally acclaimed, the event is recognised as South Africa s leading showcase of high-end design.

Alistair King, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer at the King James group of advertising companies said in his nomination note: Four Corners reveals Cape Town as a complex messy city, and the idea of Cape Flats gangsterism interpreted as a game of chess, is at the heart of its beauty. It is beautiful and ugly at the same time. The performances and direction is great.

King added, Markus Wormstorm (the composer) has done an extraordinary job. The end line in the movie sums up the films creative mantra: There s only one rule you cant stand still. You have to make a move.

Kim Seeliger, Design Indaba Expo Manager, commented on the nomination, How diverse the perception of beauty can be: Four Corners reflects on the volatility and complexity of life on the Cape Flats, juxtaposed with a message of hope.

Delegates at the Design Indaba will be invited to vote on each of the 12 finalists and the winner will be announced on 28 February.

Directed by multiple award-winning South African filmmaker, Ian Gabriel (Forgiveness) and produced by Cindy Gabriel and Genevieve Hofmeyr, Four Corners has also been nominated as Best Foreign Language Film at the International Press Academy Satellite Awards, taking place in Los Angeles at the end of February.

Four Corners screens nationwide in South Africa from 28 March.
