Berklee Announces Jimmy Haslip Scholarship

Berklee announces the Jimmy Haslip Endowed Scholarship in memory of Jane Coakley Marzulli. Named after Yellowjackets cofounder Jimmy Haslip, the award will be presented annually to an outstanding bass player who demonstrates financial need. The scholarship was established with a gift in memory of Jane Marzulli, the late wife of Tony Marzulli, a friend of the college. The Marzulli family saw the Yellowjackets perform countless times through the years and became close with bassist Jimmy Haslip when he noticed their fandom.

The inaugural Jimmy Haslip scholarship was awarded to second-year student Patricia Gomez Ferolla of Montevideo, Uruguay, a left-handed bassist (like Haslip). Earlier this spring, Tony Marzulli introduced Haslip and Gomez Ferolla after a show at Regattabar in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I wish Patricia all the success in the world with her studies at Berklee, Haslip said.

Haslip is a guitarist and bassist who pioneered the use of the five-string electric bass. His work as a bassist, composer, and producer, coupled with his kind spirit, has touched the lives of many fans, including the Marzulli family.

Berklee is the home of future artists, and I am honored to be a part of helping new generations of bass players further develop their artistry through this scholarship, said Haslip. It is an absolute joy and humbling honor to have an award in my name at such a prestigious institution. I am extremely grateful for the passion and kindness expressed by the Marzulli family in awarding this scholarship, and look forward to supporting all future recipients.
