'Nomfundo' selected for Africa On Screen Festival In Australia

Nomfundo, a short film produced by Passion Seed Communications, has been selected for the 2nd edition of the Africa On Screen Festival. The festival will take place in Melbourne, Australia between the 15th and 16th of September 2017.

The Africa On Screen Festival celebrates the latest and best cinema productions from African-origin writers, filmmakers and actors. The diverse cinematic visions from the various films will touch on issues of self-identity, sexuality and horror.

This year the Africa On Screen Festival will be part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. The Melbourne Fringe Festival is the second largest annual independent arts festival in Australia. This will be the Australian premiere of the film. The world premiere was at the Helsinki African Film Festival in Helsinki, Finland and the North American premiere was at the Blackstar Film Festival in Philadelphia, USA. The film was recently screened at the Mzansi Women's Film Festival in Johasnnesburg following its South African premiere at the Bioscope Independent Cinema in the same city.

Nomfundo is about a tormented and impulsive young woman who is pregnant with her first child. When she is betrayed by the people she holds close to her heart, she makes an erratic decision that unleashes a tragic chain of events. The film is unique in that it is in SiSwati, a minority language that is largely underrepresented in the South African film industry. The role of Nomfundo is played by Dineo Lusenga. Other cast members include Laki Koza, Thobile Kubeka, Onthatile Matshidiso and Ofentse Kharoli.

Independent filmmakers Dineo Lusenga and Sihle Hlophe teamed up to self-fund the film. The duo used a South African crowdfunding platform called Thundafund to raise additional funds. The National Film & Video Foundation came on board to assist with funding the post-production process. Lusenga is an actress, director, producer and radio DJ who has acted on TV shows such as Intersexions, Mutual Friends and Hard Copy while Hlophe is a writer/director whose work has been screened at film festivals on various continents. The film has been well received in all the countries we have screened it at and we cannot wait to share it with Australian audiences , Dineo Lusenga.
