Europe To Awake To The Sound Of The Dawn Chorus On RT Radio 1

29 April 2016: Dawn Chorus to be Simulcast on RT Radio 1 and Across Europe

RT Radio 1's The Dawn Chorus has become a radio phenomenon in Ireland. Every year, for more than two decades now, Derek Mooney and his Mooney Goes Wild team have broadcast the sounds of early morning birdsong into Irish homes on RT Radio 1, the main national radio station. This year, for the first time in the 21-year history of the programme, RT is proud to announce that all of Europe can awake to the sound of this magnificent natural concert.

To say that I am excited is an understatement" said Derek Mooney. "This is something that I have wanted to do for years. It s the avian equivalent of the Eurovision Song Contest only instead of which country will win it's a case of which country will be first to hear the birds sing. My money is on Russia. As the Sun rises in the East and as the wave of light moves across the continent, the birds wake up and burst into song. We hope to illustrate that wave of light and sound on airwaves for the listeners. Radio is the perfect medium for this project. That the birds are doing is communicating to each other and to the wider world. What they are saying is I m here I ve made it through the night. Listen to me. That s exactly what we will be doing. Listening to the birds sing. It s also great that between 5 - 6 am Irish time Europe will wake to the sound of the birds singing in Cuskinny Marsh Nature reserve in Cobh, Co. Cork. I hope they understand the accent!"

Thanks to RT Radio 1's fifteen partnered countries , including Russia, United Kingdom, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland Lithuania, Derek and his team at RT will bring you the full splendour of the dawn chorus live from right across the continent, featuring some of Europe's finest avian performers in full voice.

Experts will be on hand to explain to listeners what is happening, in real time, and to shed some light on the hidden lives of these amazing birds. It promises to be a truly fascinating experience.

The Dawn Chorus will be broadcast live on RT Radio 1 and simultaneously across numerous European radio stations Dawn Chorus live from Ireland 23:00(GMT) on Saturday 30th April to 0500 (GMT) on Sunday 1st May.
