Thirteen Scripps Research scientists featured on global list of most highly cited researchers Thirteen scientists were named to Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers list: a methodology for identifying the most influential researchers from around the world.

LA JOLLA, CA Thirteen Scripps Research scientists were named this year to Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers list, which features researchers in fields spanning biology and biochemistry, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology and toxicology. Launched in 2014, the ranking identifies the top global research scientists who have demonstrated exceptional influence in their respective fields.

The 2022 list includes 7,225 researcher awards that were issued to 6,938 individuals. Clarivate uses both quantitative and qualitative analysis to select the top researchers globally, drawing from the highly cited papers that rank in the top one percent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index over the last decade.

Of the 13 Scripps Research scientists who received awards, two are featured multiple times. Dennis Burton is awarded in the microbiology and immunology fields, and Ian Wilson is named in biology and biochemistry, as well as in microbiology.

Many of this year's award recipients are featured under the Cross-Field' category, highlighting their groundbreaking research that bridges multiple disciplines and departments. This includes Jeong Hyun Lee, Wei Liu, Ardem Patapoutian, William Schief, Eric Topol and John Yates.

Additional Scripps Research scientists named to the list include Jin-Quan Yu and Phil Baran for their foundational work in chemistry, Jean-Philippe Julien for his microbiology contributions, as well as Vadim Cherezov and Vsevolod Katritch for their pharmacology and toxicology research.

Nearly every one of this year's award recipients has been named to the Highly Cited Researchers list in the past. Wilson, Burton, Yu and Baran have all been featured since Clarivate published the first ranking eight years ago. This is Cherezov's seventh; Schief and Katritch's sixth; Patapoutian, Yates and Julien's fifth; Topol's third; Lee's second; and Liu's first time receiving such a designation.

Award recipients this year spanned 69 different countries, with the United States representing the greatest number of highly cited researchers 2,764 individuals, or 38.3 percent of the total number.

The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at Scripps Research who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers, says David Pendlebury, head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate. These individuals are helping to transform human ingenuity into our world's greatest breakthroughs and it is an honor to celebrate their achievements.
