Women Raise the Bar Again at Street League Super Crown

This was our 2nd year organizing the Womens Division at the Street League Super Crown World Championships through the Women's Skateboarding Alliance (WSA). Eight of the best female skaters on the planet were invited to compete in Los Angeles, CA, on Oct. 2nd. Among the invited were newcomers Mariah Duran and Monica Torres, along with returning pros Alana Smith, Lacey Baker, Alexis Sablone, Vanessa Torres, Pamela Rosa, and defending champion, Leticia Bufoni.

In an unexpected turn of events, Vanessa Torres was forced to pull out of the competition just days before due to a torn ACL in her knee. Newcomer (and 1st alternate) from Japan, Aori Nishimura, stepped in to fill her spot. At just 15, this was also Aoris first SLS appearance. In typical trailblazer fashion, Vanessa turned lemons into lemonade by picking up a mic and making her on-air commentator debut which was awesome to see.

As a spectator, the skating was some of the best I have ever witnessed at a Womens skateboarding contest. It is always rad when you see everyone landing their tricks, and many did just that. The person under the most pressure was arguably defending champion, Leticia Bufoni. Although she had a very scary slam on her last trick attempt, she raised the bar for everyone in the process by 110% going for it. In the end it was tech queen, Lacey Baker, who took the win with some of the best & most consistent skating I've ever seen from her. Leticia landed in 2nd, with Alexis Sablone in 3rd. Next year, I am sure we will see even more progression from this group, and hopefully some more new faces as well.
