Kuala Lumpur, 19 October 2015 Go Shop, a multi-platform lifestyle shopping service in Malaysia, is launching the country's first 24-hour Mandarin Channel which airs in high-definition format to provide a differentiated retail experience anytime, anywhere. The announcement comes on the back of Go Shop's success following the debut of its Malay-language channel and English-language online and mobile platforms in January 2015. The new Mandarin channel will air on TV (Channel 318 on Astro and NJOI), Astro on the Go as well as via Go Shop's online e-commerce and mobile commerce platforms.
Go Shop reported revenues of RM75 million in July 2015, and is on track to achieve revenue target of RM170 million by January 2016. It has sold 500,000 products to 250,000 customers nationwide since its soft launch last November. With this launch, Go Shop operates two TV Channels (118 and 318 on Astro and NJOI) as well as online and mobile commerce platforms.
This new shopping service is operated by Astro GS Shop Sdn Bhd (AGSS), a joint venture between Astro Malaysia Holdings and GS Home Shopping (GS) Inc., the global leader in TV home shopping with international presence in South Korea, China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Turkey and Malaysia. Go Shop, Astro's inaugural venture into e-commerce enables Malaysians to shop anytime, anywhere via any device of their choice.
Malaysians expect a fully immersive shopping experience, whether it is on TV, through the web or their mobile said Mr Henry Tan, Chairman of AGSS and Chief Operating Officer, Astro. Go Shop allows us to meet the changing retail behaviour of Malaysians, moving from brick and mortar to virtual shopping platforms. We combine the power of TV with audio-visual product demonstrations and digital solutions to provide a truly engaging, convenient and delightful experience to be enjoyed anytime, anywhere on multi-screens, he adds.
Go Shop is also set to benefit from Astro's reach of Malaysian customers. According to Mr Tan, Through our rich cross-media assets, AGSS has an unrivalled potential reach of 4.6 million households or the top 65% of Malaysians. Nationwide customers have enjoyed the experience of Go Shop in Bahasa Malaysia since 30 January, and we are now extending our reach to the Chinese community with Go Shop in Mandarin.
Consumers can shop with peace of mind on Go Shop as it offers great value through innovative product bundling, a 10-day return policy and product warranties, where required. Go Shop only offers authentic products (beauty, health and wellness, home appliances and kitchenware, living, sports and leisure, digital, and many more) from trusted and premium brands and these include top Korean products, top sellers in international markets and items available exclusively from Go Shop. The Go Shop hosts are local, trained to sell via TV and they undertake their own research on the products in order to localize the demo to better serve the customers.
Our focus has always been on creating a shopping environment that is exciting, convenient and accessible, said Mr Cho Sunggoo, SVP Global Business Division, GS Home Shopping Inc. We hope that more Malaysians will be able to benefit from our continuous search for quality products that can further enrich their lives, and we never stop thinking about new services that would provide added convenience to them.
Mr Cho added, What we bring to the table in this joint venture is a deep understanding of how retail works across multiple platforms, something we developed over the course of 20 years. We also have state-of-the-art retail infrastructure and technical know how, global product sourcing capabilities and enjoy economies of scale.
The Channel 318 Go Shop hosts are TV host and producer Ho Hai Chyi, dance choreographer and Astro Talent Quest 2003 runner-up Ezen Chan, former AEC news anchor Jenny Lim, Miss Astro Chinese International 2010 winner Emily Yap, actress, TV personality and radio announcer Emely Poon, MY FM radio host Catherine Ang and former copywriter and working mother Lim Ying Ling.
The Malaysian retail market is forecast to grow 44% from RM111 billion today to RM160 billion in 2020, and the non-store retail sector is estimated to grow at 20% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) and is estimated to be worth RM3.6 billion by 2020 (source: AT Kearney, 2012).
