The ird Annual Jozi Film Festival

The third annual Jozi Film Festival kicks off this Friday at The Bioscope in Maboneng Precinct with the South African premiere of iNumber Number. The festival takes place from Friday to Sunday at The Bioscope, Cine Centre Killarney and two screenings at The Rand Club on Sunday 23 February.

Directed by Donovan Marsh, the film tells the story of an honest undercover cop who, when cheated out of a reward by his corrupt superiors, joins a cash-in-transit heist gang for a once off score. Sdumo Mtshali (winner of the TV Talent show, Class Act) plays Chili Ngcobo and his by-the-book partner, Sello Shoes Moshoeshoe (lead actor of the Oscar winning film Tsotsi) is played by Presley Chweneyagae. Director Donovan Marsh will be at The Bioscope to speak about the film before it premieres.

We also recently added to our line up the South African premiere of Wes Andersons latest film, The Grand Budapest Hotel screening for one night only at Ster Kinekors Rosebank Nouveau on Saturday night at 8:15pm.

We are also proud to be screening the South African premiere of The Forgotten Kingdom (Saturday, 22 February, Cine Centre Killarney). Directed by Andrew Mudge, The Forgotten Kingdom is about a young man who reluctantly embarks on a journey to his ancestral land of Lesotho to bury his estranged father, and finds himself drawn to the mystical beauty and hardships of the people and the land he had forgotten.

Other local feature films to watch out for are Shotgun Garfunkel: The Fastest Film Ever Made; Durban Poison and Of Good Report.

We include international films for the first time in this years line up and one of the many highlights is the documentary Finding Hillywood. Set amongst the hills of Rwanda, Finding Hillywood chronicles one mans road to forgiveness, his effort to heal his country, and the realization that we all must one day face our past. A unique and endearing film about the pioneers of Rwandas film industry.

Another South African premiere is An American Promise. In 1999, two African American boys from Brooklyn entered Kindergarten at the Dalton School - an elite prep school on Manhattans Upper East Side. The film follows the boys through to their high school graduation in 2012, providing a rare glimpse into the social and emotional experiences that shape these boys into men.

There are also a number of both local and international fantastic short films that will be screening over the festival.

Also on offer over the weekend is a day of masterclasses and panel discussions at Goethe On Main, walking distance from The Bioscope. Industry leaders will be talking about all aspects of the film business from script development to funding and advances in digital media.

Tickets are R30 and can be booked online via the festivals website or cash at the door. (The Grand Budapest Hotel tickets are charged at regular Ster Kinekor rates, normal concessions apply).

Wrapping up the weekend are our Awards on Sunday evening at The Rand Club where 2014s winners will be announced. The event will be hosted by John Vlismas and the Soweto Opera Quadro will be performing.
