Orlando Pirates winger Thembinkosi Lorch was full of regret following his costly penalty miss in the Telkom Knockout final against Baroka at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
The ten-man Buccaneers lost 3-2 on penalties, giving Bakgakga their first ever trophy, after a thrilling encounter which ended deadlocked at 2-2 after extra time.
Lorch was one of the names on the scoresheet, and was named man of the match, but was visibly disappointed after his effort from the spot went wayward, denying his side a victory which would have ended a four-year-long trophy drought.
Speaking after the match, the 25-year-old said he felt it was he who cost Pirates the match.
To be honest, I'm heartbroken you know. I feel like I cost the team. The red card killed us, Lorch told SuperSport.
But I think after the red card we managed to play well. We were not sitting back we were attacking them, and we managed to get the second goal. Unfortunately, we lost on penalties.
Pirates were reduced to ten men after Marshall Munetsi was given his marching orders for a wild tackle in the dying moments of the first half, and soon went behind after Jemondre Dickens capitalised from a howler from goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane at the stroke of halftime.
The Buccaneers clawed their way back into the contest through Musa Nyatama, and things remained level going into the final whistle.
Eight minutes into extra time, another costly error at the back saw Baroka getting awarded a penalty, and skipper Mduduzi Mdantsane made no error in restoring the one-goal advantage, but it was cancelled out by Lorch with just six minutes remaining on the clock.
Orlando Pirates next travel to Bethlehem for a clash against Free State Stars on Tuesday, while Baroka face off against Mamelodi Sundowns on the same day.
