Solutions and tech providers aid NBC s Sochi transmiion

A number of broadcast technology and solutions providers have been selected to provide management and services to NBC Olympics during its production of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The Games runs from 6 23 February.

Therefore, it is imperative that this critical content is delivered to our viewers reliably and with the best picture quality possible.

ScheduALL will provide transmission and resource management to NBC Olympics, to help coordinate the dynamic environment of the Games. This will be the seventh Olympics in a row for which NBCU has leveraged ScheduALL's software and services group for the organisation of people, equipment, locations and transmission feeds.

Harmonic's MediaGrid shared storage and MediaDeck integrated media playout server systems will be used to support a highlights factory' in which staff based at NBC Olympics' Stamford facility will access event footage captured in Russia, create highlights clips, and make them available to mobile devices and computers. Harmonic MediaDeck video servers will record as many as 25 incoming venue feeds as both XDCAM-HD at 50Mbps and H.264 low-resolution proxy, and will give Stamford personnel control over 60 channels of local ingest.

HD solutions from Ericsson will deliver NBC Olympics' coverage to millions of US viewers. The company will provide a range of video processing solutions and advanced modular receivers, and will also supply specialist engineers, who, in addition to assisting with equipment/system set-up, will also be onsite 24/7.

Video test and network monitoring will be supplied by Tektronix. Its WFM5200 and WFM7200 Waveform Monitors will be used for on-site camera set up, and verifying gamut signal quality and integrity. To verify the compressed video signal quality at each end of the transmission, NBC Olympics will use the Sentry family of Video Quality Monitors.

Avid has announced that its solutions for content creation, media management and storage will be used by NBC Olympics. At the heart of this undertaking is Avid Interplay MAM system, which aims to streamline team collaboration across multiple production locations. NBC Olympics' IBC will also be outfitted with Avid Media Composer and Symphony systems connected to an Avid ISIS 7000 with 384TB of shared storage system.

A range of Densit modular signal processing, iControl control and monitoring solutions, and Kaleido multiviewers will be provided to by Miranda. The solutions will be used to help manage and prepare the huge number of signals the IBC will receive from the various venues.
