From pop and R&B to jazz and musical theater, Berklee alumni were recognized across genres at the 59th annual Grammy Awards. Eight Berklee alumni were recognized for their contributions to many of last year's top releases, collectively receiving a total of 13 Grammy Awards on the music industry's biggest night. Greg Kurstin 88 took home several of the night's final Grammys, including Album of the Year, alongside Adele for her album 25, on which Kurstin produced, engineered, composed, and performed.
Kurstin also received Record of the Year and Song of the Year Grammys for his work on the hit song Hello, which he co-wrote with Adele. In addition, Kurstin won the Producer of the Year, Non-Classical Grammy Award for his 2016 work not only with Adele but also with others such as John Legend, Sia, Tegan and Sara, Gwen Stefani, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Stephen Bray 78, who last year won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, this year won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for his work on The Color Purple.
Other alumni winners at the 59th annual Grammy Awards included John Scofield '73, who received awards for Best Improvised Jazz Solo with I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, and Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Country For Old Men; Scofield recently performed at Berklee as part of its fall Signature Series lineup. Lalah Hathaway 94 also took home two Grammys: one for Best Traditional R&B Performance for her song Angel, and one for Best R&B Album for Lalah Hathaway Live.
Just a few nights after performing at Berklees Red Room at Cafe 939 with Banda Magda, percussionists Keita Ogawa 07 and Marcelo Woloski 07 were honored for their work with popular jazz fusion outfit Snarky Puppy. Grammys presented to Berklee alumni were fairly evenly split between performers and those playing key supporting roles. To date, 115 Berklee alumni have won 279 Grammy Awards.
