Campus Updates: July 11, 2018 Graduate student Matthew Costales wins ACS fellowship The American Chemical Society's Division of Medicinal Chemistry has awarded Scripps Research graduate student Matthew Costales, one of its prestigious Medicinal Chemistry Predoctoral Fellowships. With the $30,000, one-year fellowship, Costales will continue his work developing RNA-binding small molecules for potential therapeutic applications, within the laboratory of Professor Matthew Disney, PhD, in Jupiter, Florida. He will also attend the Medicinal Chemistry Gordon Research Conference at Colby Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire in August.

Costales' work focuses on developing tools and approaches to optimizing the selectivity of small molecules targeting RNA. He was recently first author of the paper, Small Molecule Targeted Recruitment of a Nuclease to RNA, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. The paper demonstrated that small molecules can be programmed to selectively cleave RNA via nuclease recruitment. The system was used to restore activity of pro-apoptotic FOX01 transcription factor in breast cancer cells, triggering the death of cancerous, but not healthy cells.

FRQnet awards fellowship to Simon Vezina-Dawod Simon Vezina-Dawod, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in the Jupiter, Florida laboratory of Professor Matthew Disney, PhD, has received a fellowship from the Fonds de recherche du Qu bec Nature et technologies.

The award, worth up to $110,000 Canadian dollars over two years, advances Vezina-Dawod's research toward development of DNA-encoded libraries and other screening methodologies for discovery of small molecules that target RNAs involved in neurological diseases.

The library remodel turned out wonderfully due to the hard work of many different departments and individuals on campus, as well as our architects and vendor partners. Come see the finished result and see why the library is a great place to study, work, check out a book, be inspired by the graduate dissertations, get questions answered, or simply take a break and unwind.
