Reading, UK - 03 Aug 2015: Prolifics, a global technology solutions provider, today announced that BMI Healthcare, the UK's largest independent hospital group, is working with IBM and Prolifics to improve its technology infrastructure, assisting its clinicians in delivering quality patient outcomes. BMI Healthcare is deploying IBM (NYSE: IBM) Integration Bus (IIB) to streamline and speed data flows throughout the organisation to support business processes and growth.
The range and volume of clinical and business data generated by BMI hospital services has grown dramatically in recent years, and so they looked to transform their systems and operations. Rather than transitioning all systems at the same time in a big bang approach, BMI Healthcare chose IIB and a phased implementation approach that allowed them to run their legacy messaging system and new systems in parallel to ensure a successful transition.
With the new systems now in place, they are able to provide patient-centric services that are more seamless, secure and efficient due to rapid access, visibility and better control over data, as it flows through their business applications and systems. Alongside reporting and information security, integration is key to BMI Healthcare's successful move towards using cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions. IIB supports BMI Healthcare's wider programme of work to deliver national browser-based systems for all its core applications and facilities.
Information is vital to providing a responsive high quality and efficient service to our patients and consultants, said Paul Cowley, Acting CIO for BMI Healthcare. Relevant, timely and accessible data lowers clinical risk, provides greater efficiency and allows for a more seamless service for our patients. This software solution gives BMI Healthcare consistent, accurate and timely data across our core applications. It represents a significant step forward in the IT services available to our hospitals and has the capability to deliver even more in the future.
The solution, delivered with assistance from Prolifics, an IBM Premier Business Partner, manages near real-time integration that links many of the clinical systems often associated with Electronic Patient Record (EPR) with its core patient administration system. It initially brings together systems covering patient administration, theatre management, ward management, pharmacy, oncology, master data management, radiology, pathology, health screening and reporting including IBM's Cognos software.
Jean-Paul Quenet, Integration Practice Director at Prolifics, said, The solution builds on BMI Healthcare's existing best-of-breed approach to EPR and highly successful Patient Administration System (PAS), enabling the organisation to achieve its vision of delivering the best possible patient outcomes and experiences.
IIB, built on IBM WebSphere and IBM MQ technologies, replaces and expands on BMI Healthcare's previous Clearspan integration, reducing errors by a factor of 5 for the 400,000 messages that flow through the business every day. Through increased efficiencies, BMI Healthcare has consolidated its servers in this area by approximately 80%, providing direct cost savings from the project.
Adrian Hill, Healthcare Client Executive, IBM UK and Ireland, added, The healthcare industry is experiencing dramatic data growth, and is at the forefront of using big data to transform outcomes. BMI Healthcare's new ability to securely streamline and integrate the data flows can only improve patient outcomes and provide a better experience for patients and clinicians.
The initial phase of IBM Integration Bus was rolled out in spring 2015 on time and on budget.
