Our Plug-in Collective community giveaway for July/August is a superb tape emulation effect from German developer Black Rooster Audio. From 9th July to 3rd September, Plug-in Collective members can download Magnetite for free, and get a huge discount on Black Rooster's expansive Compressor Bundle.

Infusing your digital productions with the sonic texture and energy of analogue tape, Magnetite is a go-to plug-in for beefing up drums and basses, boosting vocal presence, and bringing cohesion and colouration to the master bus. Select one of three Tape Types - the low frequency-bumped Black, high frequency-emphasising Blue, or neutral' Red - and crank up the Record Level knob to imbue your source material with fabulous electro-magnetic saturation, from subtle warming at low settings all the way to overt distortion at the higher end of the range. Adjust the frequency response with the Tape Speed and Bias controls, and for even more authenticity, dial in the mechanical wow and flutter, hiss and 60Hz hum of a real tape deck. The Playback Level knob can be used to counter the gain added by any increase to the Record Level, and the PPM-style VU meters are switchable between monitoring input and output levels.

Whether you're working with live drums, guitars and vocals, or making dance and electronic music entirely 'in the box', Magnetite is an effortless and instant solution for adding palpable analogue vibe, weight and character to individual tracks and group busses. And needless to say, it's of particularly direct relevance to producers of lo-fi, synthwave and other retro styles, where its evocative fluctuations and noise make it a powerful creative tool.

What I most enjoy about using this plug-in is the variation in tape types available, and the wide range of effects you can achieve with them. Used on a drum buss, it adds a really nice saturation and gluing effect, and just by driving the input, you can add a load of crunch and fatness. Magnetite can be used on most sounds to get a more tape feel, and it's super easy to get quick results with!
