The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) are set to take place on Sunday 28 August at the Prudential Center in New Jersey and things are heating up! Before the social media vote categories were announced on Friday 19 August, chart-topping hip-hop stars Lil Nas X, Kendrick Lamar and Jack Harlow led the pack of nominees with seven nods each.

With two more nominations added to her list, half-South African rapper Doja Cat is now in the lead with a whopping eight nominations which also makes her the most nominated female artist at the 2022 MTV VMAs.

DOJA CAT IS NOW THE MOST NOMINATED FOR MTV VMAS After hosting and performing at the 2021 MTV VMAs, there is hope for Doja Cat to dominate the stage again. The half-South African star scored eight nominations for the 2022 awards with nominations for Video of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop for her upbeat single, Woman.

The 26-year-old also scored nominations in the Best Choreography, Best Editing and Best Art Direction categories. In addition to these nominations, Doja Cat has also been nominated twice for Song of the Summer for her solo single Vegas and I Like You (A Happier Song), a collaboration with Post Malone.

Fans will cast their votes for the Song of the Summer, Album of the Year and Group of the Year categories on MTV's Instagram stories.

NICKI MINAJ TO RECEIVE MICHAEL JACKSON VIDEO VANGUARD AWARD The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is also known as the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MTV VMAs. This year, American rapper Nicki Minaj will make history as the second female rapper to receive the award behind Missy Elliot. The 39-year-old is also the fourth rapper to ever receive the award.

Speaking to Billboard, the president of music at Paramount, Bruce Gilmer, praised Minaj for breaking boundaries in hip-hop.

She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically, Nicki', said Gilmer.

The award-winning rapper will also hit the stage for a showstopping performance and she will be one of three hosts!

WHO WILL HOST AND PERFORM AT THE MTV VMAS? Joining Nicki Minaj as hosts for the MTV VMAs are Jack Harlow and legendary rapper LL Cool J. Jack Harlow, who wowed the world with his album Come Home The Kids Miss You, will also be performing.

Other performers include Lizzo, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Panic! At The Disco, Marshmello, Khalid and Latin popstar, J Balvin.
