Order: ZEISS Overhauls Space Theater in Kolkata

JENA/Germany; KOLKATA/India, 20.02.2018. ZEISS has been commissioned with modernizing the Space Theater at Science City in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Science City is a science park and the largest of its kind in India. Each year, it attracts more than a million people from all over the world. The park is part of the National Council of Science Museums and comprises the Science Centre and the Convention Centre.

The planetarium was opened in 1997 and is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The tilted dome measures 23 m in diameter. It will feature a very high-resolution ZEISS powerdome stereo full-dome system. Digital projectors create a very bright image on the dome. The new projection dome is currently being installed under the direction of ZEISS. For the reconstruction, including LED dome illumination, the new sound system and the seating, ZEISS has partnered with the local representative Orbit Animate. With this modernization, the most significant technological change is from analogue 2D to digital 3D Stereo projection. The aim is to achieve visibly enhanced images with a wide range of new content.

The renovation work also includes architectural services and the complete removal of the old technology. The original projection dome is being replaced with a new one, whichis optimized for digital full-dome projection. ZEISS is delivering all the computer technology and software needed for the planetarium operation. The integrated 3D planetarium enables live journeys through the solar system and up to the edges of the visible universe. Stereo projection provides visitors with a very immersive experience. Objects in space seem close enough to touch, says Dr. Martin Wiechmann, Head of Planetariums at ZEISS. At the Space Theater, full-dome films will be shown, most of them on a host of subjects from astronomy as well as geo- and other sciences. Very bright projections are a real advantage when it comes to impressive stereo displays on the large dome. That's why very high-speed projectors from Christie were chosen for this project. The surround sound system, dome illumination and seating nicely round off ZEISS's scope of supplies and services. The planetarium is scheduled to reopen in summer 2018.
