Underscoring its global reputation as one of Canada's most renowned colleges for television production, the C gep de Jonqui re public college in Qu bec has upgraded its TV studio complex with five Calrec Brio consoles and a versatile Dante IP network. Located in the college's dedicated Art et Technologie des M dias (ATM) department, Studio A features a Brio 36 Duet console while Studio B houses a Brio 36 Medley, giving the main production suite a significant boost. An additional three compact Brio 12 consoles have been deployed for flexible use across the substantial Joseph-Angers campus.

C gep de Jonqui re is the largest public college in Qu bec and has specialised in media communications courses for over five decades. Aiming to deliver real-world experiences for an international roster of media students, its specialist ATM course enjoys relationships with institutions in Europe and Africa as well as media partners across Canada.

ATM of C gep de Jonqui re is the only public school in Qu bec that offers this level of professional training across the communications, television and film industries, says Alexandre Morin, Technician and Project Manager for cole Sup rieure en ATM. Over the years we have prepared thousands of students for professional broadcast careers in journalism, radio, marketing, television and film. Part of that success is our cohorts being able to study on industry-standard equipment, and for us that means Calrec as an obvious choice."

Morin explains that flexibility and reliability were crucial elements of the decision making process. He says, "We're now able to centralize and share audio sources for all audio consoles and stage boxes. Plus, the system works in standalone mode, which is essential for learning purposes. Our Brio 12 consoles can be used for the very first steps of audio console learning and can be utilised across C gep's campus. We can also mix C gep's concert hall Dante console sources independently in our classrooms."

The college's flexible Dante IP infrastructure enables the three portable Brio 12 surfaces to cater for any eventuality. At under 450mm (18 ) wide, Brio 12's internal DSP and built in I/O connectivity gives them the flexibility to meet changing production and training needs on the fly. Meanwhile, all five Calrec consoles are connected via a central Calrec router, while their robust Dante connectivity enables them to share I/O with existing third-party equipment from the likes of Yamaha and Sennheiser.

All five consoles also have access to a modular I/O box as well as a portable Br.IO unit that can be moved to meet the needs of any production. Both main studio consoles are also integrated with ATM's Ross Overdrive news automation system, delivering fully automated control for C gep de Jonqui re's news and current affairs output.

"We wanted students to make their first audio learning steps on smaller consoles, before switching to bigger ones," explains Morin. "Because Brio 12 and Brio 36 have the same surface and software, the learning curve is ideal. Dante flexibility gives us access to professional mixed shows in C geps concert hall, which gives students opportunities to mix independently in a live professional setting. The flexibility of having on board inputs/outputs and two centralized systems helps to teach students signal routing, and convenience.

Commissioned on site by Calrec's Canadian Partner True North AV and integrated by digital media integration company Applied Electronics, the investment comes on the back of a significant upgrade to the college's Art et Technologie des M dias department in 2024. The upgrade included the installation of 22 Calrec Audio Type R modular mixing systems alongside a completely new IP infrastructure and a suite of new studios and recording booths in its Joseph-Angers building.

Kypros Christodoulides from True North AV says the installation continues C gep de Jonqui re's dedication to delivering the best preparation and resources for its roster of media students.

The College's range of journalism, communications and media programs emphasises the complete broadcast chain from acquisition to delivery, he says. This investment in Calrec Brio consoles not only gives students access to broadcast-quality equipment, but its flexible Dante IP network also gives them the ability to adapt their needs to meet a range of production and training requirements.
