Competition Garners Overwhelming Response with more than 5,000 Global Entries Victors to Receive Cash Prizes, Canon Products on October 15 at Closing Ceremony

XPOSURE 2016, Sharjah's first international photography festival initiated by Sharjah Media Centre (SMC), has announced the winners of a global photography competition that was held as a prelude to the event. Around 15 winners have been chosen across seven categories, from over 5,000 global entries received across a 90-day period.

All winners will receive their prizes of cash awards and Canon products at the special closing ceremony of XPOSURE 2016 on October 15 at 10am at Expo Centre Sharjah.

Alamsyah Rauf from Indonesia was declared the overall winner of the competition and will receive the grand prize of USD 3,000 and a Canon 5D MK IV Camera.

Rauf won first place for The Soulmate, a stunning black-and-white portrait, and said: I am truly excited to have been chosen for this unique honour. It is indeed a privilege to be here in Sharjah and witness the unfolding of this wonderful event. The photography competition has also given me the opportunity to meet and interact with some of the world's renowned names in the field.

David Mart n Huaman Bedoya from Peru won first place in the Current Affairs category for his arresting entry, When the River Sounds. Lal Nallath's capture, Sandstorm in Dubai achieved second place in the same category.

Meanwhile, Spaceship by Waheed Akhtar won first place in the Fine Art category, followed by Sajin Sasidharan's Black Mirror in second place. In the Landscape category, Polish photographer Wojciech Kruczynski's Kjerkfjorden took the top honours, with Slave's Edge by Finland's Janne Kahila bagging the second place.

The winners of the Photojournalism category both hailed from Bangladesh. Md Akhlas Uddin won first place for his entry Living Waste, while MD Tanveer Hassan Rohan's Fire Fighter ranked second.

In the Street Photography category, Deba Prasad Roy ranked first for his capture Net Casting, and Md Khalid Rayhan Shawon came second for his image The Flying Path.

The winners of the above-listed categories will each receive a Canon Pixima PRO-100S camera.

The winners of the Under 14 category all hailed from the UAE. Aishwarya and Afra Alsuwaidi won the first and second places respectively for the Creative Content listing, while Daniel Buhat and Khalid Abdulfattah Quzli were first and second place winners in the Capture by a Mobile Phone category. Each of the first prize winners will receive a Canon G9X camera as their prize takeaway.

Winners of all seven categories are set to receive cash awards of US$1,500, while runners-up will receive US$500 each.

Speaking on his win, Daniel Buhat said: Participating in the XPOSURE photography competition has been an amazing learning experience for me personally. I was thrilled when I heard that my entry was chosen as the best in its category. I am now looking forward to seeing the other exhibits and participating in the workshops offered.

Tariq Saeed Allay, Director of Sharjah Media Centre, said: We are extremely pleased with the overwhelming response XPOSURE has received globally. Over the 90-day period that we ran our photography competition, we received more than 5,000 exceptional entries from across the world, making it particularly challenging to choose the eventual winners.

Allay added: XPOSURE is a first-of-its-kind integrated platform for participants to showcase their skills to a receptive audience that includes professional photographers, as well as rank amateurs and photo enthusiasts from across the world. We hope to expand the scope of XPOSURE in the coming years so the event connects with a wider audience and provides novel opportunities to competent lens-men and women.

Winning entries have been prominently displayed for public viewing at Expo Centre Sharjah as part of the four-day festival.

Day 1 of XPOSURE also featured a series of free-to-attend seminars, including a session on the safe use of UAV/RPAS (drones), as well as screenings, keynote presentations and reasonably priced workshops for beginner to advanced levels. Conducted by some of the leading figures in international photography, these sessions offered insights into not only skills and techniques, but also ways to sell and license images.

XPOSURE International Photography Festival is the official photography, educational and imaging platform launched by Sharjah Media Centre and combines a broad range of photography events, including exhibitions, workshops, seminars, presentations, competitions, photo walks and a trade show for photographic products.
